Shame can be one of the forces that keeps addiction going.

Dr. Blair Steel, Psychologist at Carrara Treatment, explains how shame can become paralyzing — and why addressing it is an important part of treatment.

Clinically, she focuses on separating the person from the behavior and reinforcing that addiction does not define someone’s character, value, or who they are at their core.

The liver has a remarkable healing capacity. Dr. Craig Smith, Medical Director of Carrara Treatment, explains that a fatty liver will usually begin to improve within weeks of stopping drinking, while chronic inflammatory changes can take 3–4 months to begin resolving.

He also notes that if changes have not progressed to fibrosis, the liver may almost completely heal.

Malnutrition is one of the most overlooked problems in early addiction treatment.

Dr. Craig Smith, Medical Director of Carrara Treatment, says restoring the body often has to happen before the mind can heal. That means correcting deficiencies in vitamins, minerals, protein, and thiamine, the building blocks most people in active addiction are running critically low on.
