Here are the four main reasons to get surgery for an overactive parathyroid (otherwise known as Hyperparathyroidism)

04/20/2026

Fun Fact! After surgery, your parathyroid can be a little “stunned,” which can temporarily drop your calcium levels. That’s why I often recommend calcium supplements to keep things stable while your body recovers.

And yes, Tums can also work in a pinch. They’re mostly calcium, making them a simple and accessible substitute when needed!

Full circle moment. I started back in 2019 at the AAES Annual Meeting… just sharing thoughts, cases, and learning along the way.

Now here I am again - Lexington, Kentucky - 46th Annual Meeting. Same mission, bigger community, deeper purpose.

Grateful for the growth, the conversations, and the people pushing this field forward.

I get asked this all the time: “When should I worry about a swollen lymph node?”

Three common signs are 1. discoloration 2. they don’t look symmetrical 3. it keeps getting bigger. But as always, when in doubt, check it out. 🙏

High PTH + kidney stones isn’t something you “wait and see.” It’s your body telling you there’s an underlying problem that needs to be fixed.

When the parathyroid is overactive, it pulls calcium from your bones and floods your bloodstream - often leading to painful, recurrent stones and long-term damage if ignored. So yes, at that point, surgery isn’t optional.

Why is thyroid surgery so complex? Because we’re operating in a tight space, right next to the nerves that control the vocal cords. So, the second time operating on the same thyroid means navigating around smaller space, scar tissue, and the vocal cords just millimeters away. 🙏

Some cases, especially complex thyroid surgeries that may affect the , demand a level of specialization, precision, and experience that goes beyond any one person. The best thing we can do for a patient is recognize when it’s time to bring in or refer to another surgeon.

Medicine isn’t about ego. It’s about outcomes, and the right referral at the right time can make all the difference.

A lipoma is usually benign, but “usually” isn’t good enough in medicine. That’s why we scan, analyze, and make sure we’re not missing anything more serious (like cancer). Imaging helps bridge the gap between assumption and diagnosis. And, there you go 🩻🩺

Why we don’t just remove every thyroid nodule - part 2!

03/24/2026

Great question! How do we perform surgery when all 4 nodes are abnormal? Well, we keep what works and remove what doesn’t. Your body is a lot more efficient than you may think, and you don’t need a full thyroid to function - just about ¾ of one gland can do the job.👏

Removal of the week: the blue/black node. When deciding whether or not a thyroid nodule should be removed, we look at size, structure, blood flow, and most importantly, changes over time. Of course, context, imaging, and biopsy results often help us identify and examine these symptoms. 🙏
