David Blacker Therapy My therapy services include in-person office sessions or virtual Telehealth sessions from the comfort and convenience of your home. (LMFT #145698) Life is messy.

I provide a supportive & affirmative space for teens, adults, couples & families to find their joy again. Relationships are hard. Pandemics are lonely. And parenting...? Don’t even get me started! If you're feeling like societal expectations are consistently setting you up for failure, I get it... and I assure you that you are not alone. If you've gotten this far in my profile, I imagine it's because you have a different story you'd rather be telling yourself right now — one where you are thriving and not merely surviving. If this resonates, give me a call. In our work together, we’ll reawaken your self-awareness by building upon the strengths and passions you may have long forgotten you had. I believe you are the expert of your own hopes and hardships; I will work to help facilitate change, comfort and radical self-acceptance. We'll collaborate on ways to manage daily stressors and anxieties and get you living an authentic and fulfilling life. As a gay dad and former advertising executive of 20+ years, I bring a unique perspective to my diverse client base. I employ creativity, humor, out-of-the-box thinking and psychological skills-building to foster resilience and affirm lasting, positive change. Healing can be even messier. But you’re here — and that’s a great place to start. Check out my website (davidblackertherapy.com) for more information — I offer a free 15 minute phone consultation so we can determine if my therapeutic style is a good fit for your current needs.

Sometimes your inner critic gets loudest when you’re about to do something that matters: set a boundary, try something new, or let yourself be seen.

Before letting it decide, pause and ask:

“Is this helping me make a thoughtful choice—or keeping me from taking a chance?”

You can feel uncertain and still give yourself permission to move forward.

Maybe you learned to keep the peace because speaking up once felt unsafe. Maybe you became fiercely independent because relying on someone led to disappointment. Maybe you stayed busy so you didn’t have to feel.

Those responses made sense. They helped you through something.

Healing can begin with a gentle question: Is this still protecting me, or is it keeping me from the connection I want now?

You don’t have to judge the part of you that learned to survive. You can thank it, and slowly give yourself more choices.

We sometimes talk about healing as though we’re supposed to eventually leave the past behind.

But healing doesn’t necessarily erase what happened—or even change the way we understand it.

The old story might still be true: I was hurt. I wasn’t chosen. I didn’t get what I needed. I learned to protect myself.

Healing is making room for another story alongside it:

I survived it. I understand myself differently now. I can choose differently. I can trust differently. I can become more than what happened to me.

The goal isn’t to rewrite history. It’s to stop allowing history to be the only author of what comes next.

A standard can feel unquestionably real simply because you have repeated it for years. Ask where it came from, who benefits from it, and whether you would require it of someone you care about. You may be working very hard to pass a test no one else is giving.

Your inner critic may still be using rules that made sense when you were younger and had less power. The adult you are now has more choices, resources, and voice. When criticism appears, ask whether it reflects today’s reality—or an old attempt to keep you safe.

Feeling behind can be exhausting—especially when the standard for “enough” changes every time you get close. Before pushing harder, ask: Did I truly miss the goal, or did I move it again? A finish line you can name gives you a real chance to recognize progress. 🙌🏽😌🏁

A reminder I find myself giving clients all the time:

You don’t have to solve everything at once.

When life feels especially heavy, we can convince ourselves that we need a big answer, a big decision or a big change to feel better.

Often, we don’t.

Sometimes we need to take one breath, feel what we’ve been avoiding, put down what isn’t ours to carry, and let someone else know we could use a little support.

Small shifts matter.

And you really may be doing better than you think.

Sometimes rumination isn’t really about solving the problem.

It’s about staying mentally occupied so we don’t have to fully feel what’s underneath the problem.

Fear.
Loneliness.
Disappointment.
Vulnerability.
Uncertainty.

The mind convinces us that if we just think about it enough, replay it enough, analyze it enough, we’ll finally arrive at relief or certainty.

But many times, rumination is emotional avoidance disguised as problem-solving.

Healing often begins when we stop asking:
“How do I mentally solve this?”

…and start asking:
“What feeling am I trying not to feel?”

Today is Trans Day of Visibility 💞🏳️‍⚧️

In a time that feels increasingly divided and, at times, frightening—visibility is not just about being seen. It’s about being protected, respected, and held in our shared humanity.

To the trans and nonbinary community: you deserve to live your life as your authentic self—with dignity, safety, and care. Not conditionally. Not someday. Now.

Your existence is not up for debate. Your humanity is not negotiable.

May we continue to show up—not just in visibility, but in action, in advocacy, and in love.
