On September 4, 2026, after six weeks of testimony and six days of jury deliberations, the Lindsay Clancy case ended in a mistrial because the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict. This tragedy must be a turning point for how our nation addresses maternal mental health and cases of infanticide.

Unlike over 20 developed nations with specific infanticide laws prioritizing psychiatric care over long-term incarceration, Illinois remains the only U.S. state recognizing postpartum mental illness as a mitigating factor in sentencing.
