Susto came with a cure built in. The folk diagnosis named what left, assumed it could return, and specified how to call it back. PTSD entered the DSM in 1980 and gave the injury a code. Somewhere after that, the label started getting read as permanent damage.

Psychiatry formalized the recovery model in the 1990s and treated it as new. Your great-grandmother had a phrase for the endpoint already perhaps it being: ya volviĂł en sĂ. What did your family call it when someone came back to themselves?

Remember being called “la chillona” at seven, and that label just stuck? In family systems, there’s a specific term for the individual who carries everyone else’s distress: the ‘identified patient.’ This concept often explains why you might find yourself in therapy, while your family genuinely believes everything was fine.

What was your childhood label growing up? Share your experience in the comments.

For first-generation adults in California seeking support, I offer bilingual therapy. You can book a free 15-minute consultation through the link in my bio.

Båñate, cĂĄmbiate, sal aunque sea al patio. She had the whole list right and nobody ever told her why it worked. Why it didn’t land for some of us is slide 8.

Nobody warns you that ‘making it’ can sometimes feel like static. It’s not about being ungrateful; you’re a survival-mode graduate who was never taught the ‘feeling’ part. That’s the next step.

“El que se enoja, pierde.” “Calladita te ves más bonita.” “Camarón que se duerme se lo lleva la corriente.” These phrases, often meant as survival logic, were passed down by those who couldn’t afford to break. Yet, they landed deep within us, still influencing the anger we suppress, the rest we can’t embrace, and the needs we’ve learned to conceal.

A belief absorbed in childhood doesn’t simply disappear because you’re an adult. But you can identify its underlying message, vocalize it, and consciously decide if it still aligns with who you are.

I’m Heidy, a bilingual (English/Spanish) associate therapist dedicated to supporting first-gen adults across California. I help navigate the intergenerational and cultural patterns often overlooked in English-language self-help resources. For a free 15-minute consult, find the link in my bio.

Nobody in that house ever just sat down, so you never learned how. It wasn’t laziness they were avoiding; it was that resting cost money they didn’t have. What did a day off look like in your house?

That feeling when your mom wasn’t paranoid, she was just accurate especially about a place you never lived in. We grew up with all the rules, but none of the reasons, and we’ve been following them ever since.

Which one did you grow up with? đŸ€”

Cutoff and enmeshment may seem like opposites, but they’re actually more similar than you’d think. The third option has a name, and it’s not about requesting a boundary. Have you ever felt like ‘just going no contact’ isn’t a viable option for you?

The chore itself was never the problem, but rather the feeling of ‘you’re doing it wrong.’ đŸ«§ It’s okay to discover peace in the very same actions that once brought judgment. When you do it for yourself, it feels completely different. Which chore brings you a sense of calm?
