Sudden cardiac arrest kills about 90% of people who experience it outside a hospital. G'bari Gilliam, a 32-year-old professional dancer, is one of the survivors.
When his heart stopped during a rehearsal, a fellow dancer began CPR while others searched for an AED, and paramedics rushed him to Cedars-Sinai's Emergency Department, where his care team placed him on advanced life support after a second cardiac arrest. Twelve days later, he received a donor heart.
Genetic testing later revealed G'bari had an inherited heart condition that often shows no symptoms, especially in athletes used to pushing through exhaustion. He's now in physical therapy, preparing to return to the stage.
