A step forward for healthier kids and healthier communities. 💚

Dr. Goran was proud to be in attendance as Governor Gavin Newsom announced new legislation advancing California’s commitment to healthier food, nutrition, and preventive health.

The legislation includes the creation of a first-in-the-nation label for non-ultra-processed foods (UPFs), stronger nutrition standards for children’s meals, clearer information about added sugar, and continued investments in California’s Farm to School program.

As researchers and advocates committed to improving children’s health, we’re encouraged to see prevention, nutrition, and access to healthier choices remain at the forefront of California’s healthcare strategy.

Healthy kids. Healthy communities. A healthier future.

Researcher Spotlight: Dr. Alaina Vidmar, MD
We’re proud to spotlight former pilot awardee Dr. Vidmar for her continued contributions to pediatric obesity research and care.

Her recent research, “Early Reinitiation of Obesity Medication After Sleeve Gastrectomy in Youths,” explores the role of obesity medications following surgery in youth.

Dr. Vidmar also recently spoke with CBS News Los Angeles about the rising rate of childhood obesity and the importance of addressing this growing health concern.

🔎 RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT | FRESH-LC STUDY

What if supporting a child’s health started with supporting the whole family?

The FRESH-LC study , a part of SC3DRP, is exploring a culturally tailored approach to childhood overweight and obesity among Latino families by putting caregivers at the center of behavior change.
The ongoing randomized trial includes 167 Latino families and provides bilingual (English/Spanish) telehealth programming for parents and additional caregivers. The approach recognizes the importance of familismo — the value of family connection, shared responsibility, and collective well-being.

💡 The takeaway: Healthy habits don’t happen in isolation. Creating supportive environments at home may be an important part of helping children build healthier behaviors.

Because this study is ongoing, researchers have not yet reported the final outcomes.

Understanding Weight Stigma in Children 💛

Weight stigma can affect children in ways that go far beyond how they feel about their bodies. Negative comments, teasing, stereotypes, and assumptions about weight can impact confidence, mental well-being, relationships, and even how children engage with healthcare.
Creating healthier environments starts with how we talk about weight. Using respectful, person-first language and focusing on health rather than appearance can help children feel supported—not judged.

Every child deserves to feel valued, respected, and cared for at every size. 💛

Breaking the stigma of breastfeeding means honoring every family’s feeding journey. It does not mean breastfeeding is possible for everyone or that formula-fed babies cannot thrive.

Families deserve access to breastfeeding support, safe formula options, accurate label information, and freedom from judgment.

Feed with care. Support without stigma.
