What to expect at your initial visits:

Infertility affects 1 in 8 couples. Before we consider what we need to do to treat infertility, we will focus on trying to find a cause. At your initial consultation, we’ll take a thorough history and ultrasound, and look for any risk factors that may be clues as to why it has been challenging to conceive.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Causes of infertility include ovarian dysfunction 20-40% of the time, tubal and pelvic pathology 30-40% of the time, male factor 30-40% of the time, uterine factor, and unexplained infertility 10% of the time.

At the follow up visit, we’ll review what we suspect might be the cause and then how to treat it. Sometimes, that treatment will involve medications, surgery, or fertility treatments like IUI or IVF. Our goal is to educate you on all your options, how the work, and estimated success rates. After that, we try to identify the best individualized plan for you considering your concerns and your family goals.

Topic Tuesday: if I go through IVF or an egg freezing cycle, will I lose all my remaining eggs?
⁣
The short answer is no! I describe to patients that your remaining egg reserve is microscopic, and we aren’t able to see them. Each month a set of follicles (with eggs within them) will be release out of that reserve. In a normal menstrual cycle, one of those follicles will grow to be the dominant follicle that will eventually ovulate and release the egg, and the rest of the eggs will die off. The next cycle, another set of follicles will be released from the remaining egg reserve.

In an IVF or egg freezing cycle, we will give medications in hopes that all the follicles will grow that month, as opposed to dying off. So the process of IVF or egg freezing won’t impact future cycles. It will just utilize the eggs that would have otherwise died off in that given cycle.
