HMI Director George Kappas explains that making a conscious decision to change is only one part of the process.

We may genuinely want a new habit, a different routine, or a better outcome, but once we become tired, distracted, stressed, or busy, familiar patterns can take over. That is one reason change can feel easy at first and much harder to maintain later. The goal is not only to decide what you want, but also to make the new behavior familiar enough that it stops feeling like a temporary exception.

What resolution have you started more than once?

Instructor John Melton explains that students learn to help clients develop new ideas and belief systems, and then create structures that support those changes. Over time, practitioners learn how to connect suggestions with the client’s goals, behavior, and lived experience so the work becomes more individualized and practical.

In this live hypnosis demonstration, instructor Tanya Nord connects the participant’s imagined future self with a small physical response: movement in her index finger.

As the participant focuses on feelings of confidence, productivity, openness, and success, Tanya suggests that the finger will begin to rise on its own. The movement becomes part of the hypnotic experience, a physical cue connected to the ideas and emotions being explored. This is one example of how hypnosis can combine imagery, focused attention, expectation, and physical response.

Did you notice the moment her finger began to move?

In this HMI NLP class, Joe Tabbanella takes a simple generalization and keeps asking questions until something deeper appears.

“I’m always late.” Always? What happens if you arrive on time? What comes to mind? Eventually, the pattern connects to a fear of being judged. Sometimes the behavior we criticize is trying to protect us from something we have not consciously identified yet.

What habit of yours might make more sense if you understood what was underneath it?

In this HMI Imagery class, instructor Cheryl O’Neil begins by guiding the participant to close their eyes, take slow, deep breaths, and gradually bring attention inward.

From there, she directs awareness through the body, from the feet and legs upward, while reinforcing relaxation with each breath. This is one way a hypnotherapist can help a participant shift from everyday external focus into a calmer, more inwardly directed state.

Did you notice your own breathing slow down while listening?

In this HMI Q&A, Director George Kappas explains the idea of a subconscious “life script” the story we form early in life about who we are, what we’re worth, and what level of success feels normal or available to us. That story may not be accurate, but if it becomes familiar enough, we may keep returning to it. So when life begins moving beyond what feels “known,” resistance can show up as doubt, avoidance, procrastination, or self-sabotage.

In this HMI class, John Melton explains that hypnosis can make a person more receptive to suggestion without erasing their ability to think, understand, or evaluate what is happening. That is also why professional hypnotherapy should be individualized. The practitioner first learns what the client needs, then presents ideas in a way that makes sense for that person. Hypnosis is not one script for everyone.

Did you think hypnosis meant your critical thinking temporarily disappeared?

If I asked you to imagine a wise and loving presence, what would appear?

A person? An animal? A light? A feeling? Something completely unexpected? In this HMI imagery class, Cheryl O’Neil explains that imagery does not have to look a certain way to be “right.” The mind may respond with a picture, sensation, symbol, or simply a sense of something.

What appeared for you first?

In this live HMI classroom demonstration, instructor Tanya Nord gives the participant suggestions connected to restful sleep, remembering dreams, emotional release, confidence, self-love, and self-respect. This clip offers students a look at how suggestions can be layered together and connected to a client’s individual goals.

If you could give your subconscious one positive message tonight, what would it be?

In this HMI Neuro-Linguistic Programming class, instructor Joe Tabbanella demonstrates how a statement like “I can’t do anything right” can be explored through careful questioning until the more specific experience underneath it becomes clearer. Learning how to listen for these patterns can help future practitioners better understand the person behind the words.
