LINDSAY CLANCY TRIAL UPDATE: HOW DO YOU RULE OUT A DIAGNOSIS YOU NEVER ACTUALLY LOOKED FOR?

Today’s testimony raised serious questions about the care Lindsay received before the deaths of her children.

No thyroid testing. No drug testing. No structured psychological testing. No prior records reviewed. And the psychiatrist testified she could not recall ever treating a case of postpartum psychosis—yet Lindsay was discharged after it was ruled out.

Lindsay was reporting intrusive thoughts, seeking help from multiple doctors, struggling with severe sleep disruption, and continuing to say something was wrong.

You cannot confidently exclude a diagnosis you never adequately investigated.

CLANCY TRIAL UPDATE: NO ONE ASKED THE RIGHT QUESTIONS!

Eight witnesses took the stand today, and several gave testimony that could have opened the door to much deeper questions about Lindsay’s mental state—including that she felt “like a zombie,” was having “dark thoughts,” and appeared more reserved than usual.

Postpartum psychosis is not a steady state. Someone can appear “fine” or have lucid moments while still experiencing severe psychiatric symptoms.

These witnesses gave the attorneys openings. They just didn’t take them.

Were there red flags? Could this have been preventable? Those are the questions we should be asking.

Here’s the reality: Intrusive thoughts are NOT postpartum psychosis. One involves unwanted, terrifying thoughts. The other can involve delusions and command hallucinations.

The misinformation is frightening women who are already scared of their own minds.

I truly think these ridiculous bows are psychological manipulation of the jury - this should not be allowed. These prosecutors are turning a trial into theatre. We have a woman who cried out for help, rapidly taken over by post partum psychosis and ended the lives of 3 beautiful babies that she loved with all her heart. The little girl liked to wear bows.

DAY 6 OF THE LINDSAY CLANCY TRIAL.

I’m still furious.

Today, Lindsay Clancy spoke in court for the first time, confirming she understood the stipulations. Jurors also heard testimony from her surgeon about her injuries and from a toxicologist regarding benzodiazepines found in her system.

What continues to frustrate me is that this case didn’t have to become a public spectacle. We should be having an informed conversation about postpartum psychosis—not watching misconceptions and misinformation play out in a courtroom.

This isn’t justice if we refuse to understand the illness at the center of the case.

The new details emerging in the Michigan family annihilation paint a far more calculated picture. As a forensic psychologist, these cases are a reminder that family annihilations are often preceded by escalating conflict, control, desperation, or other warning signs that deserve serious attention.

We have to stop reducing these tragedies to simple explanations. The psychology is far more complex.

POSTPARTUM PSYCHOSIS IS NOT SCHIZOPHRENIA. IT IS NOT THE SAME THING AS A CHRONIC PSYCHOTIC DISORDER.

We have to stop confusing these conditions and making assumptions. They are different diagnoses with different presentations, different courses, and different implications.

STOP IT.
