I’m not going to say I’m officially a bubbly Black girl but I’m no stranger to people trying to bring me back down to earth when I get excited about something. Here are a few reasons why people may try to place limits on bubbly Black girls.

For years, I was told that studying beauty wasn’t a serious topic.

Beauty was dismissed as superficial. Frivolous. Unworthy of academic attention.

But what if beauty influences far more than we realize?

What if it shapes who gets hired, who gets helped, who gets heard, who gets dates, and even how we see ourselves?

As a mental health expert, I spent years studying the ways beauty affects our lives—from self-esteem and identity to opportunity, bias, and belonging. What I discovered changed the way I think about beauty forever.

Today, I’m so excited to share that my book, “The Problem with Pretty”, is officially available for preorder/order.

In this book, I explore the psychology, neuroscience, history, and culture of beauty—and why understanding beauty may be one of the most important acts of self-awareness and liberation available to us.

If you’ve ever wondered why beauty has so much power, why it can feel so painful, or how to reclaim your relationship with it, this book is for you.

Still processing how surreal this moment was.

Last week, I had the opportunity to host a workshop for the attorneys of Women in Legal at Disney on beauty bias, implicit bias, and the very real ways appearance-based assumptions shape our lives, careers, confidence, and opportunities.

We discussed the science of beauty, the psychology of perception, and how unconscious assumptions impact professional environments in ways many people never realize. What made the conversation especially meaningful was the willingness in the room to engage deeply, thoughtfully, and honestly.

As someone who has spent years researching beauty, identity, perception, and mental health, it was incredibly affirming to bring these conversations into spaces that help shape culture and decision-making at such a large scale.

Thank you to Women in Legal at Disney and WiLD Impacts for the invitation and thoughtful dialogue. And thank you to everyone who showed up curious, reflective, and open.

My book, The Problem with Pretty, releases June 2, and I’m so excited for these conversations to continue.

Desired but not known. Watched but not held. That’s a specific kind of loneliness nobody really talks about — the kind that lives inside a beautiful life.
I went deep on this one. The psychology of loneliness, what incels actually get right (and catastrophically wrong), why patriarchy makes men relationally poor, and why beauty is a door, not a destination.

Size as it is connected to beauty signals fragility and control. My research found that black women feel more control over their bodies than white women do. And this makes sense given how white women are reinforced. What do you think?

Beauty is actually neuroprotective. Here are a few ways it improves our lives and our health.

If you know my mom you know you’ve met one of the most formidable women in the world. She’s classy, smart, gorgeous, and was the best example of balance. I’m glad god gave her to me. Happy Mother’s Day! 💕

Today, as we honor our mothers on Mother’s Day, let’s not forget our fore mothers, our ancestors. As I’m preparing for the launch of my book The Problem With Pretty I’m having conversations about how we internalize society’s judgments of our beauty. We get these faces, these bodies, these shades, from our ancestors. When you talk about me you’re talking about them. Show some respect.
