GMO Bananas Are Here. Unlabeled. Because, you know... they don't want you to know it's GMO. đź‘€ We reported on the UK-based biotech company, Tropic, back in 2014 and the company announced that two banana varieties are already in the market, sold in the U.S. and Canada. Since the USDA has deregulated the genetic engineering process of gene-editing and the products produced through gene-editing, these GMO bananas will require no safety testing at all and will not require a "bioengineered" label. Tropic won't even disclose where these GMO bananas are being grown. On top of that, because of the USDA deregulation, the company, or retailers, may even decide to trick you and advertise them as non-GMO. How screwed up is that? It's bananas.
The only way to avoid these GMO bananas will be to buy Certified Organic, Certified Biodynamic, or Non-GMO Project Verified. The Non-GMO Project prohibits gene-editing under its certification standards, so look for the butterfly.
