Many of the patterns we struggle with today began as intelligent survival strategies.

Your nervous system learned them for a reason.

When we bring compassion and curiosity to those responses instead of shame, new pathways begin to open.

Healing isn’t about becoming someone new.

It’s about helping your system feel safe enough to be who you already are.

One thing I’m learning in my own life right now is how hard it can be to sit with anxiety in relationships. In the past, when uncertainty showed up, my nervous system wanted relief immediately. My mind would start scanning for answers, reassurance, or some way to resolve the feeling as quickly as possible.

But what I’m discovering is that anxiety in the body isn’t always a problem to solve. Sometimes it’s simply the nervous system reacting to the unknown. Learning secure attachment has meant practicing something different: staying with the feeling long enough to understand it.

And that doesn’t always mean just sitting still with the anxiety. Sometimes it means moving it: breathing deeply, going for a walk, letting my body discharge some of the activation so my mind doesn’t rush to make a story. When the nervous system settles, clarity often follows. I’m learning that security isn’t the absence of anxiety, it’s the ability to stay present with it long enough for the truth to reveal itself. 🤸

✨ Listening With the Body ✨
A One-Day Retreat on Relational Healing & Connection Through Horses

In just four weeks, Emma and I will be gathering on a beautiful ranch in Malibu for a day of slowing down, reconnecting, and listening more closely — to the body, to the nervous system, and to the quiet wisdom that often gets drowned out in daily life.

This retreat is for women who are craving depth and connection. Who are longing for steadiness in their relationships. Who want to explore healing not just through conversation, but through embodied experience — in the presence of horses and the land.

You’re not looking for a savior.
You’re looking for a co-pilot.

Someone steady when things feel turbulent.
Someone who doesn’t take over the wheel — but doesn’t disappear either.

In my own life and in 16 years of clinical work, I’ve seen how often thoughtful, self-aware adults confuse their desire for partnership with weakness.

It isn’t weakness.
It’s the nervous system asking for shared regulation.

Healing doesn’t require rescue.
It requires relationship.

If this resonates, you’re not alone here.

If you grew up with parents who weren’t all that curious about your thoughts, feelings, or experiences, it makes sense that curiosity might not come naturally in your relationships. When we don’t have early experiences of being truly seen and understood, it can be harder to open up—or even know how to ask meaningful questions that deepen connection.

But here’s the good news: curiosity is a skill we can build. Noticing where we tend to shut down or make assumptions is the first step. The more we practice asking open-ended questions and genuinely listening, the more we create space for trust, intimacy, and real understanding.

A prompt to explore:
Think about a time when someone was deeply curious about you. How did it feel? Now, consider one small way you can bring that same kind of curiosity into your relationships this week.

We all long for love that feels safe, steady, and secure. But sometimes, the very security we crave can make a relationship feel less exciting. Why does this happen?

Psychologist Stephen A. Mitchell suggests that passion and security exist in tension. The more we know and predict our partner, the less space there is for mystery and desire. Passion thrives on the unknown, on the moments when we see our partner as separate from us rather than an extension of our daily routine. But in long-term relationships, we naturally move toward closeness, predictability, and comfort, which over time can dull the intensity of longing.

So how do we keep love both safe and alive? Can security and passion coexist? Let’s talk about it. Have you ever felt this tension in a relationship? Drop your thoughts below. ⬇️
