One of the questions I ask my couples clients is: How do you connect sensorially — not s*xually, but sensorially?

Because intimacy and s*x are not the same thing. And a lot of disconnection in relationships isn’t about desire, it’s about two people who experience sensuality and closeness through completely different channels without realizing it.

also brings in the importance of curiosity for what the other person’s sensual and intimate experience is. Without it, you miss the opportunity for connection.

Sometimes life is hard enough that choosing the behavior or action you know is the growth choice feels insurmountable.

And so sometimes you do the thing you know is exactly the pattern you’ve trying to break.

That’s not failure. The shame is optional. What matters is whether you can stay conscious in that moment — aware of what you’re choosing and why you’re choosing it.

Self awareness is not linear. There is no right and wrong answer. And every short term choice made with consciousness in it carries learning.

Sometimes that’s enough. Because ultimately that learning is being stored in the body as information which will be accessed the next time this choice comes up.

One of the most honest conversations I’ve had about this topic with a guest.

In this conversation with Ailey Jolie () we go into what it actually looks like when the body has been used as a tool for belonging rather than a home to feel safe inside.

There comes a point where self-improvement stops being the right project.

Not because you’ve failed at it. But because the psyche stops wanting to function better and starts wanting to be alive differently.

There is an unspoken rule most of us absorbed long before we had language for it.

Your gifts are welcome. Until they aren’t. Until they become too clear, too visible, too threatening to the system that benefits from you staying smaller than you are.

This piece is about what happens after that, and what it takes to keep weaving anyway.

There is a difference between suffering that deepens you and suffering that becomes an identity.

Meaning-making and identity-building are not the same thing.

This episode goes into what happens when the wound stops being something we carry and starts being something we need.

Sacrifice based in codependency tends to accumulate until it surfaces as a debt the other person didn’t even know they owed.

Genuine sacrifice, doesn’t ask for repayment. I don’t require my kid to repay me for what I give her. I don’t keep a tab. It’s simply what love, or devotion, or responsibility asked for, and I gave it.

The part of us that needs to feel special, significant, and central can can organize itself around victimhood just as easily as around achievement. And, the person who suffers most conspicuously can occupy a position that’s nearly impossible to challenge.

The moment we become aware of something we want to change, most of us immediately try to become someone different.

But skipping the witnessing phase doesn’t produce change. It usually just produces a performance of change, which is almost never a lasting change.

James Hollis calls it “the larger life.” It’s the life that opens up on the other side of genuine suffering. Not because suffering is good, but because it forces a confrontation with reality that comfort never will.

Left alone, the ego manages, maintains, calculates, avoids. It takes the path of least resistance every time. Suffering is what breaks through that management and forces contact with something deeper.

And when it’s actually metabolized, it leaves a mark you can recognize: the capacity to sit with difficulty without rushing to resolve it, tolerance for ambiguity, and a different relationship with what actually matters versus what only seemed to.

People who’ve done this work are harder to impress and easier to trust. They’ve seen things, experienced things that have not only changed them, but changed the way they move through the world and hold others.

I spent about ten months in survival mode after the fires.

Not because I wasn’t doing the work, I was. But because survival and processing are not the same thing. And the psyche cannot begin the second until the first has space to settle.

This is what I mean when I talk about initiation needing a container.
