Can probiotics help chronic stomach pain? šŸ¤”

The answer is: sometimes—but not all probiotics are created equal.

For children with Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBIs), certain probiotic strains have better evidence than others. Knowing which strains to choose—and when they’re most likely to help—can make all the difference.

In my latest article, I break down the research, the probiotics with the strongest evidence, and what every parent should know before buying a supplement.

Want to support your family’s gut health? You may just need to change how you serve fruits and vegetables. šŸ„•šŸŽ

A recent study found that French children and adults consume nearly twice as many live microbes as Americans, and people who consumed more microbes also tended to have healthier overall diets.

Three simple ways to add more beneficial microbes to your family’s meals:

šŸ„” Leave the peels on fruits and vegetables when possible.
🄦 Serve more raw produce, such as carrots, broccoli, celery, cauliflower, and radishes.
🌱 Plant a small garden—even a pot of herbs by the kitchen window counts!

These small, time-saving changes can help support a diverse microbiome, healthy gut lining, and immune health.

Reading aloud with your children is about so much more than building vocabulary. It creates connection, supports language and cognitive development, encourages meaningful conversations, and can even reduce anxiety in parents.

Just one picture book a day can expose a child to approximately 1.4 million more words by age five compared with a child who is never read to. And the benefits do not end when children get older. The books may change, and your child may move from sitting in your lap to sitting beside you, but that shared time still matters.

Make reading part of your family’s routine, choose print books over screens when possible, ask questions along the way, and let stories become a space for learning, imagination, and closeness.

Not all v**es contain ni****ne—but that doesn’t mean they’re harmless.

Vitamin v**es, melatonin v**es, cannabis v**es… I don’t recommend using v**es as a delivery method for any substance. Beyond what’s inside them, va**ng itself can normalize a habit that may make ni****ne products seem less concerning later on.

The reality is that many kids are exposed to va**ng as early as middle school, often because of curiosity, peer pressure, or struggles with anxiety. The good news? Most teens who v**e want to quit, and supportive, judgment-free conversations with parents truly make a difference.

I break down what every parent should know—including why connection, trust, and early conversations are some of the best tools we have.

Parents ask me about bug spray all the time, especially during the summer and before travel.

The good news? Insect repellents are safe and effective when used properly.

A few key takeaways:
• DEET and picaridin remain the most trusted options for preventing mosquito- and tick-borne illnesses like Lyme disease, malaria, dengue, and West Nile virus.
• For everyday nuisance mosquitoes, natural repellents can be a reasonable choice but generally need to be reapplied more often.
• Apply sunscreen first, then insect repellent.
• Adults should apply repellent for children, avoid the eyes, mouth, hands, and cuts, and wash it off before bedtime.

The best repellent depends on your destination and your level of risk.

My kids get what they call ā€œthe jippiesā€ā€”uncontrollable laughter over something completely nonsensical.

It’s contagious between them, and if I’m being honest, my first instinct isn’t always to join in. But what if I should?

The more I looked into the science of laughter, the more surprised I was. Laughter isn’t just fun—it supports your mental, immune, and cardiovascular health. Even more surprising? Studies show that fake laughter can provide many of the same benefits as genuine laughter.

Sometimes, the simplest way to reduce stress and reconnect with your child is to let yourself be a little silly.

In my newest article, I share why I set a daily laughter goal, what the research says, and a few simple ways to bring more laughter back into your home.

There’s a new sunscreen ingredient on the market—but it doesn’t change my advice much.

For the first time in over 20 years, the FDA has approved a new UV filter, Bemotrizinol. It’s more photostable, less likely to be absorbed into the bloodstream, provides excellent UVA/UVB protection, and may be more reef-friendly than many older chemical sunscreen ingredients.

That’s good news, especially for adults. But when it comes to children, I still recommend mineral sunscreens containing non-nano zinc oxide or titanium dioxide whenever possible.

They remain my first choice because they sit on the skin, are less likely to cause allergic reactions, and are minimally absorbed. The biggest takeaway? The best sunscreen is the one you’ll actually wear—but sunscreen is only one part of good sun protection.

I break down what this FDA approval really means, who should consider Bemotrizinol, why my recommendations for kids haven’t changed, and the most important ways to protect your family from UV exposure.

Creatine use among teens is increasing, and many parents are wondering whether it’s safe.

For most healthy teens, creatine monohydrate is probably safe, but I would never make it the starting point. Before supplements, focus on the basics: whole foods, adequate sleep, physical activity, and strong social connections.

If your teen is interested in creatine, use it as an opportunity to have a broader conversation about health, performance, and what truly supports long-term wellbeing.

As always, choose a third-party tested product and remember that supplements should complement a healthy lifestyle, not replace one.
