INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH
TO THE CLASSROOM AND BEYOND: USC VITERBI STUDENTS DEVELOP HIGHLY ACCURATE SPINAL DISC TEACHING MODELS

After attending the second annual USC Make-A-Thon, Assistant Professor of Clinical Physical Therapy Joseph Derian DPT ‘17 approached a group of USC Viterbi School of Engineering students to help build a lifelike prototype of a spinal disc model to improve students’ and patients’ understanding of spinal anatomy and help physical therapists identify spinal disc injuries. “It has been a great experience so far and I am excited to see how capable these students can be so early in their careers. I hope to continue working with them to develop more models for patient education and medical education,” says Derian, who competed the USC Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency program in 2018 and the USC Spine Physical Therapy Fellowship in 2021.

DIVISION FACULTY MEMBER BUILDS CAREER ON MOVEMENT, CURIOSITY AND CONNECTION

During her more than two decades at the Division, Associate Professor of Clinical Physical Therapy Kathryn Havens MS ‘05, PhD ‘13 has held a number of roles — student, researcher, faculty member, mentor — thanks, in part, to a community that inspired and supported her continued evolution. Today, Havens aims to inspire the next generation of movement experts in much the same way. “I want to train clinicians who are curious, compassionate and excellent at what they do,” she says. “I hope that those I’ve mentored go on to do things that I never could have imagined.”

USC Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy alumni Joseph M. Derian, DPT, and Tatiana Olevsky, DPT, were invited this past weeekend to present at the 9th Annual USC Spine Symposium.

Dr. Derian, a USC BKN&PT faculty member, presented “Preoperative Physical Therapy for the Aging Spine,” while Dr. Olevsky presented “Hip-Spine Syndrome.”

Both speakers are graduates of USC’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program, Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency, and Spine Physical Therapy Fellowship, a strong representation of USC’s advanced clinical training in spine rehabilitation. Fight On!
