One scroll can turn “Look how much they’ve learned!” into “Wait… should they be doing that already?”

Milestones are useful guides, but development isn’t a competition between two children.

When comparison creeps in, come back to your child: What are they doing now that they weren’t doing a month or two ago? What skills are emerging?

And if you still have a question, ask it. You can respect your child’s individual pace and seek guidance at the same time.

Sometimes “favorite foods” have something in common beyond taste.

They may be predictable in texture, easier to chew, easier to move around the mouth, or simply foods your child has had lots of successful practice eating.

That doesn’t mean every selective eater has an oral motor difficulty. But when a child consistently avoids foods that require more chewing or coordination, it can be worth looking at the skills behind eating—not just the number of foods they accept.

That’s one of the things I look at during a pediatric feeding evaluation.

A feeding evaluation is about much more than counting how many foods a child eats.

I’m also looking at *how* eating happens: chewing patterns, tongue movement, lip closure, coordination, how different textures are managed, and much more.

These skills can help us understand why certain foods may be easier—or harder—for a child.

Save this if you’ve ever wondered what a pediatric feeding therapist is actually looking at during a meal.

Some nights it can feel like you’ve barely figured out what to serve before the requests start again.

If this is happening at your table, try taking one decision off your plate: serve at least one familiar food alongside the family meal, then let your child decide what and how much to eat from what’s offered.

Feeding is complex, and you don’t have to make every meal perfect.

Feeding is complex, and sometimes the foods your child chooses over and over are simply the foods that feel easiest and most predictable.

Instead of taking familiar foods away, we can keep them on the plate while creating low-pressure opportunities to explore something new.

And if your child’s variety stays limited, understanding the why—including oral motor skills, sensory processing, and feeding experiences—can help us know how to support them.
