This sweet kitty presented to the ER for open-mouth breathing and increased respiratory effort. Based on exam + T-FAST (a quick, focused ultrasound of the thorax), we determined this patient needed a thoracocentesis, a procedure used to remove fluid from the chest and allow the lungs to re-expand.
๐ก When is a thoracocentesis indicated?
In cases of pleural effusion causing respiratory compromise. Common differentials include congestive heart failure (CHF), neoplasia (such as lymphoma), pyothorax, and others.
๐จ For pet parents, signs of respiratory distress at home include:
โข Rapid or labored breathing (often โฅ 40 breaths per minute)
โข Lethargy, sudden hiding, or collapse
โข Blue or pale gums
โข Decreased appetite and low energy
If you notice any of these signs, your pet should be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible.
