✨MS. HENSION IS BLACK HISTORY✨

Let's shine a light on Tarji P. Henson, an incredible inspiration and the founder of the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to supporting the mental health of Black people.
Recently she was interviewed by on the . Her answers to Angie’s questions were surprising to many, especially when Angie asked if she was happy. She said she isn’t.
It’s so easy to look at the wealth, glitz and glamour of celebrities and forget that they are human. They struggle with sadness, trauma and anxiety just like we do.
Taraji also said “no one posts their pain.” How true is that?! We all post our life’s highlights, showcasing what’s beautiful and successful. It feels good to show that we’re doing well, even if it’s not the full picture.
Especially because of the hearts and likes those posts receive. Did you know that each time you see a like or positive comment on a post, your brain gives you a little “hit” of a feel good chemical called dopamine? That’s part of what makes social media so addictive.
Taraji and Angie spoke about this too. They discussed how harmful social media can be, because it breeds comparison and the need for constant validation from clicks and likes.
I’m not saying get off social, that’s certainly not the answer. What I am saying is “real” validation is an inside job — You can validate You. Validation from others means they can give it and take whenever they feel like it. So your feelings are in their hands. Trust me, you don’t want that. 😉
Thank you Taraji for all of your work to support Black people’s mental health and for being honest and authentic about your pain. You are Black History.

✨ A SELF LOVE TALK 🗣

We all know how important it is to love others. As women we often live our lives in service of the people we care about the most, whether that means sending our mother flowers on her birthday or volunteering at a homeless shelter.

But do we treat ourselves with the same kindness and generosity? Do we speak to ourselves the same way we talk to our friends, family and colleagues, offering the same encouragement, positive affirmations and praise?
If you’re like me and the rest of the women on the planet, the answer is probably nope, or not nearly enough. But it doesn’t have to be that way. We can be deliberate about self-love and celebrating our own victories, just like we do someone else’s.
If self-love feels uncomfortable, start small, begin with something simple.

Each day take a moment to tell yourself how proud you are for making another healthy meal, or getting a difficult project done ahead of schedule.
Maybe you'll make it a regular practice to say "I love you" when you pass a mirror, or see your reflection in the window. Or you can take a page out of the actress Jennifer Lewis’ book 😂.
It can be anything that works for you — as long as you make time to “love on you.” The bonus is, if you do it, others will learn to do it too!

✨YOU DESERVE GOOD LOVE✨
You're worthy of healthy love and relationships. I mean the kind of love Whitney was singing about in “You Give Good Love.” 🎶
You deserve to be treated with love, empathy and appreciation by your family, loved ones and everyone in between, whether it’s Valentine’s Day or any other day of the year. ❤️

✨DITCH THE STIGMA ABOUT DEPRESSION✨

We’ve made a lot of progress raising people’s awareness about depression. But we still have a long way to go before folks truly grasp that depression needs to be taken seriously, because it’s still stigmatized.

I think it’s because folks don’t really understand what depression is, unless they have experienced it themselves. There is so much misunderstanding and misinformation about this illness.

For example:

-Depression is not sadness. Depression is an imbalance of certain chemicals in your body.

-People can’t just ‘get over’ depression. It impacts your brain and body – it’s a REAL thing.

-Depression can’t just be ‘prayed away’.🙏

-People who have depression are not crazy, they are not weak.

-Medication is not the only way to manage depression.

The best way to ditch the stigma about depression is to learn more about it and get help. There is no reason to struggle with depression alone or in shame. Please reach out for support –[email protected]

✨CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY✨

Choose to be happy😏? ...easier said than done right? ...not gonna lie, it’s hard sometimes. Especially while waiting for our votes to be counted. It’s worth the effort though.

Keep these tips in mind, I think they will help:

✔️Do something at least once a day, no matter how small, that makes you happy (e.g. 5 minutes of a comedy podcast, listen to music, enjoy a cup of tea on your porch).
✔️When things frustrate you, resolve them and let them move on like clouds. No need to keep talking about them all day.

✔️Don’t WAIT for circumstances to get better – you have to FIND ways to be happy with the circumstance you’re in.

✔️Your happiness will not come TO you – it comes FROM you. It takes some work, but you can make it happen.

✨WHAT YOU SAY IN HERE STAYS IN HERE✨

There are so many benefits of therapy:
-Learning why you do what you do
-Developing coping skills
-Establishing new and healthy habits

One of the best benefits of therapy is privacy and confidentiality – “what you say in the therapy room, stays in the therapy room.” There are two exceptions, child abuse and elder abuse has to be reported. But everything else is private. 🤐

So you don’t have to worry about your words being used against you, or feeling embarrassed and betrayed because someone shared your secrets.

So if you were looking for another reason to get into therapy here it is 😉.

✨LET’S FLIP THE SCRIPT✨

Instead of asking your kids these questions. Let them ask you the questions.

Answering questions provides the opportunity to answer the What, Why, When, How, and Who of the world to your kiddos.

Kids' questions give us a window into their world view, a hint about what makes them happy and their fears, friends and concerns.

Give it a try – let me know how it goes.

✨ASK FOR HELP✨

If you look closely at this picture, you’ll see a pink block beneath my thigh. It’s helping me do the splits.

Here’s the thing – I can do the splits without the block. But on this day, the block was available to help me, so I used it…made doing the splits easier.

The moral of the story – just because you CAN do something alone, doesn’t mean you SHOULD. Let people, and in this case a block, help you.

Ask for help as often as you can. Ask unapologetically, and like you expect and deserve it – because you do.

Then use the time and energy you save to do something healthy for yourself.

✨THE MAGIC OF OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS✨

Answering open-ended questions teach kids to think, develop language skills, build confidence and their ability to express themselves. The thing is – we usually ask kids closed-ended questions.

What’s an open-ended question?
✔️Has no right or wrong answer
✔️Can’t be answered with yes or no
✔️Requires elaboration on thoughts and ideas
✔️Helps you see things from your child’s point of view

What’s a closed-ended question?
✔️Limited answers- usually yes or no
✔️There is only one correct answer
✔️Parents get minimal information
✔️Determine what your child already knows

EXAMPLES:
Closed: What is your favorite movie?
Open: I would love to hear about your favorite movie.

How to ask open-ended questions:
•After asking the question, be silent and patient to give your child time to think.
•Encourage more sharing by saying things like, wow that’s interesting, tell me more.
•Leave correction, and criticism out of the equation – your kiddo will stop talking.

Want to make-up your own questions. Try these question starters.
•Tell me about…
•What would happen if…
•What do you think about…

Post your kid’s answers in the comments section – especially the funny ones. We all can use a good laugh.🤣
