Please join us for an online workshop with Dr. Bruce Reis as he discusses the intricacies of sound waves and their potential signifiers in the psychoanalytic context. In his paper, Dr. Reis “cautions analysts not to assume that the musicality of speech can be absorbed by the cognitive or rational emphasis we give to language, and argues for recognizing that musicality cannot be fully subsumed by signification.”
He goes on: “A recent review (Hajdu 2020) of a book about the jazz saxophonist and composer Ornette Coleman quotes the artist making similar point: 'C' is just a name," he told one of his students ... "You could call it 'Tokyo' or 'wisdom' or 'sandwich', but that does not signify the sound." Come listen and explore analytic listening with us!

In this unique program, Dr. Bruce Reis will share both theoretical insights and clinical vignettes about analytic listening, showing us how to sit with the parts of a patient’s mental life that exist outside of words. Discover how stepping away from insight-driven goals can transform your clinical presence and open new possibilities within psychoanalytic work.

Traditional psychoanalytic therapy often treats listening like seeing, searching for hidden meanings in an effort to develop insight. This program challenges that visual focus by diving into an aural approach. Rather than rushing to interpret or decode the patient’s communications, “listening-with” invites the psychoanalyst to remain in a space of not knowing, staying present with experiences that may exist beyond language or immediate understanding.

“Analytic therapy … does not seek to add or introduce anything new, but to take away something; and to this end concerns itself with the genesis of morbid symptoms and the psychical context of the pathogenic idea which it seeks to remove” (p 261 vol VII). ~ Sigmund Freud (6 May 1856 - 23 September 1939)

In our upcoming seminar, psychoanalyst Judy Eekhoff asks:
Without a subject, can there be an object? Can there be emotion? Without a
connection, can there be change? Without two, can love heal? Without aesthetic
reciprocity (a la Meltzer), can there be love? Is there such a thing as one-
sided love? Can analytic love overcome deficits in the subjective sense of self?
Can it overcome delusions of nonexistence?

Join us to learn more about a contemporary understanding of Freud's "a cure through love".

Our next online workshop is a thought-provoking exploration of the curative factors in psychoanalysis, considered particularly when working with patients previously considered unanalyzable. Judy Eekhoff makes the claim that, fundamentally, our wish to know ourselves or each other takes two - two subjects, a subject and an object, a you and me. What happens if you and me, if subject and object are not psychically registered? What happens if I do not experience myself as a Self?

Join us to learn more about a contemporary understanding of Freud's "a cure through love".

“Everywhere I go I find a poet has been there before me.” ~ Sigmund Freud

The PCC invites the public to join us for a screening of the new documentary film, Outsider.Freud, on Sunday, April 19th at 10 am PDT, both in person in Los Angeles and on line via Zoom.

During the screening with the help of insights from the director of the documentary film, Yair Qedar, and Freud biographer, Christfried Tögel, you’ll have a unique opportunity to dive into so many facets of the work and life of this incredible thinker and writer whose talents and rigor we are still benefiting from.

During this fundraiser, you’ll also have a chance to support the Psychoanalytic Center of California that puts forth such important work as psychoanalysis. There are donation levels to suit all who are interested. Come and join us! Link to register is in bio.

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Judy Eekhoff of the Northwestern Psychoanalytic Society and Institute for our next continuing education program — A Cure Through Love?

When Freud wrote to Jung that psychoanalysis is a cure through love, he could not have imagined how far the field would journey. Today, we sit with patients who tell us they cannot love — and who seem equally unable to receive it.

Dr. Eekhoff invites us to explore the psychodynamics and treatment approaches that may reach these patients — and to ask together: what does healing really look like when love alone is not enough?

We hope you'll join us.
