Today is Day Three of Navaratri. The Deity for the Day is Chandraghanta, She Who Rings the Bell of the Moon.
When you go to temples in India. there are often large bells outside the doorways. We ring the bells for a number of reasons. One is to surround the subtle body with the sacred vibrations of the bell. And even more importantly, the vibrations of the bell can break apart the mental tendencies in the mind, especially the ego.
Mantra is especially potent today to dismantle the mental patterning that we have accumulated from childhood, even generations prior, and certainly from our current surroundings. This patterning is often negative and prevents us from seeing our own goodness.
This is also the last of the first section devoted to Mother Kali, who loves us fiercely and wants us to quit our crap. These first three days are often the hard ones on this special journey because as we make positive changes, our aversion to discomfort starts to increase, magnifying our negative tendencies. It's natural to feel impatient, cranky, sad, and more. They all stem from a distorted sense of ego which Kali wants to kill. Like a fierce mother ripping off a band aid, she wants to rip off our illusions so that our Truth does the radiating.
Personally, yesterday was a hard day of anger and irritation. I was influenced by the fighting amidst my two sweet cats which has caused everyone a lot of stress. It was magnified by news articles sharing more injustice. I watched myself want to lose patience on the phone and later with someone in a clinic and had to pause - are they really annoying or am I just seeing things through a limited lens? Can I see their divinity from the eyes of my divinity, instead of my ego? I don't need to spread my household's stress onto others. So, I leaned into the vibrations of the Divine Mother instead my ego. It helped, a lot.
If you feel challenged by people (or animals) or experiences, instead of reacting, lean towards mantra. It's not a cop out, it's a way in to Truth that doesn't leave any more damage along the way. In truth, everyone is just really trying their best. (most everyone)
Om Devi Chandraghantayai Namah!
