BTW, a smile is su***de prevention.
A “how are you?” is su***de prevention.
A random check-in is su***de prevention.
Sitting with someone in the hard moments is su***de prevention.
Listening without judgment is su***de prevention.
Making someone laugh is su***de prevention.
Reminding someone they matter is su***de prevention.
Showing up is su***de prevention.
Sometimes, the smallest act of connection can be the thing that reminds someone they can get through it🤍

Some thoughts I’ve been sitting with as both a mom and a trauma therapist.

We spend so much time preparing women for labor and so little time preparing them for the postpartum reality that follows.

Just because something is common postpartum doesn’t mean we should accept it as “normal.”

The signs are there. The exhaustion, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, overwhelm, guilt, and distress deserve to be taken seriously.

Instead of asking, “Is this normal?” we should also be asking:

“Why is this happening so often, and what can we do to better support mothers?”

Imagine expecting someone in one of the most vulnerable periods of their life to also become their own care coordinator.

We tell mothers to ask for help, then give them long waitlists, limited providers, confusing referrals, insurance barriers, and fragmented care. At some point, we have to stop asking why mothers aren’t reaching out and start asking why help is so hard to reach.

If justice is the goal, we have to make room for complexity.

We can hold immense compassion for the children and their families, acknowledge the devastating consequences of what happened, and also recognize that Lindsay was a mother experiencing profound psychological suffering who deserved to be taken seriously and treated.

Justice should not require us to stop caring about the person who was suffering.

I’m probably not what you picture when you hear “therapist.”

I’m not neutral about everything.
I don’t have my life perfectly figured out.
I question things.. even things I was taught in grad school.
I laugh a lot. I swear sometimes. And I’m still doing my own work.

But I take being a therapist very seriously.

I care deeply about the people who trust me with their stories. I keep learning, questioning, researching, and growing because having a license doesn’t mean you’re done becoming a better therapist.

Healing isn’t creating an easy life. It’s building the capacity to live through the hard moments instead.

My pockets are always full of metaphors, just in case someone needs a different way to understand their story.

Nobody talks enough about how healing can make life feel temporarily more uncomfortable.

The hard thing about grief is that there isn’t always a bridge. Sometimes healing looks like slowly walking through the mud, one step at a time.

Fighting every wave leaves you exhausted, but learning how to float can help you make it through.

Imagine spending years in a life raft after the ocean has calmed. The raft isn’t the problem bc it protected you. Living there is optional now.

Comfort can become a cage and the danger is that it rarely announces itself. It often sounds like, “Maybe later,” “What if I fail?” or “This is good enough.”

One of the hardest parts of healing is learning that you don’t have to do something every time you feel uncomfortable.

You don’t have to immediately fix it, make it go away, or solve everything right now.

Sometimesy best tip is to is remind yourself:

“This feeling is uncomfortable, but I can handle it.”

The more you practice that, the more your nervous system learns that discomfort isn’t dangerous. 🤍
