Psychotherapy is not advice, nor a form of "self help. Through the " Corrective Emotional Relationship" a patient is able to tread into the deep territories of their soul. Through weekly psychotherapy sessions, a good therapist learns to identify aspects of a client's personality, emerging from childhood, and we begin the process of identifying and repairing these critical aspects that have created impasses to having stable, fulfilled, and solid relationships.

I just had the best conversation with : And Just Like That… We Found Therapy and here’s what I kept coming back to:
Everyone in S3 E13 is running from something. Carrie changes cities. Charlotte optimizes. Miranda performs. Samantha hides behind the persona. Trey disappears into fantasy and p**n.
None of them think they’re avoiding. They think they’re coping.
That’s the thing about escape it stops feeling like avoidance and starts feeling like just who you are.
And Trey is the most fascinating case of all. His impotence isn’t physical it’s psychogenic. His body works perfectly when he’s asleep. When there are no relational stakes. No wife. No intimacy. No one needing him to actually show up. The moment real contact is required, the system shuts down. Because Bunny never let him become his own person. And you cannot fully love someone you are not free to love.
The p**n piece is the same story. Desire doesn’t disappear it gets rerouted. To wherever there’s no risk. No eye contact. No one who needs anything from you. It’s connection without the vulnerability of actual contact. And the more that becomes the pattern, the further away real intimacy gets.
Charlotte trying to fix it measuring him while he sleeps, researching, optimizing is heartbreaking and completely understandable. She’s doing everything right. She’s solving the wrong problem. Because there’s no spreadsheet solution for an undeveloped self.
We also got into Carrie’s narration as avoidance, Miranda performing for a room that wasn’t worth it, Samantha’s shadow self cracking open at the Met Gala, Big as a potential s*x addict, and whether the wellness industrial complex is actually helping anyone heal or just giving avoidance a better aesthetic.
The body tells the truth the mind won’t say.
Come listen.

There’s this idea that couples should be able to just decide to be intimate again like flipping a switch. But the body keeps score. It remembers the night nobody came home, the months of sleeping with distance between you, the moment you stopped reaching. You can’t bypass that material. You have to walk through it. The couples who do? They often build something more honest and more erotic than what they had before. Both partners need to feel chosen.

This is one of the most painful patterns I see in couples work. The pursuer doesn’t stop loving. They stop being able to afford it. And the withdrawer who was never rejecting the person, just managing their own overwhelm looks up one day and realizes the reaching stopped. By then, both people feel alone. This isn’t dysfunction. It’s attachment doing exactly what it was designed to do. The work is learning to find each other before the distance starts to feel permanent.

Safety. Curiosity. A little mystery. The sense that you’re still being chosen. When those things erode quietly, the way they usually do desire just stops showing up. Therapy doesn’t manufacture chemistry. It rebuilds the ground that chemistry needs to grow on. You’d be surprised what comes back when two people finally feel safe enough to want again. Hope and change are always possible.

When couples stop being physically intimate, the instinct is to pathologize it and to treat it like something broke. But more often, something got too heavy to carry into the bedroom. Resentment. Grief. Disconnection that nobody named out loud. S*x is vulnerable. And vulnerability requires safety. If the safety eroded, the body followed. That’s not failure. That’s information. And it’s exactly where the real work begins.

Unspoken needs don’t disappear. They accumulate into withdrawal or a rupture. Don’t let it fester.

Perfection is rigid. Rigidity breaks. The couple who sustain connection over time aren’t the ones who never hurt each other. They are the ones who learned to stay open and come back when things get hard. Intimacy is not built on getting it right. It is built on staying present when it is hard. Couples therapy can be this safe place.

Most conflict in relationships isn’t about the daily surface complaints. Although very much annoying, and negative. Yet, it is about being seen, heard, and supported. Ask yourself what is this complaint truly about? What are they really asking? What’s behind the door is where you look.

What looks like a relationship problem is almost always an internal one first. These are not character flaws but signals pointing you to look inward. So the question is: what am I not ready to feel?
