Dr. Cortney S. Warren - Choose Honesty, LLC Dr. Cortney Warren is a board certified clinical psychologist and author of Letting Go of Your Ex. How can I have more successful relationships?

As a Clinical Psychologist, I am frequently asked a wide range of questions about the human condition: “How can I be happier? What is my purpose in life? How can I help myself change?” At their core, most of these questions boil down to one central question: “How can I live a more fulfilling life?”

In my professional and personal life, I have come to believe that self-deception is our biggest cha

llenge to living a fulfilling life. It can stop us from feeling true happiness, thwart our ability to grow, and leave us with massive amounts of regret. This website is an effort to help people become more honest with themselves. Choose Honesty is dedicated to people who actively choose to live a more honest life.

The way we respond to disagreements in our romantic relationships can reveal a lot about our emotional intelligence.

I was recently featured in YourTango discussing seven phrases that emotionally stubborn people often use, along with healthier alternatives that encourage empathy, self-awareness, and stronger communication.

Emotional intelligence doesn’t mean always agreeing--it means being willing to reflect, listen, and consider a perspective beyond your own when in relationships with others.

Is ignorance really bliss?

On one hand, being unaware makes you less responsible for "bad choices." In that way, it shields you from the impact of unideal actions.

On the other hand, ignorance limits your growth and freedom.
Because without self-awareness, you can't make meaningful, deliberate changes to your life.

So, while ignorance may offer temporary comfort, true liberation comes from facing reality and using that knowledge to evolve.

Strong relationships aren’t just about finding the “right” person, they’re about staying curious about each other and continuing to communicate as you grow.

In an article featured in En Pareja, I discussed nine questions that can help couples build greater trust, connection, and emotional security.

Why do we lie to ourselves, even when the truth may be obvious?

I recently joined When Blk Men Talk for a conversation with Mark Simmons about self-deception and how avoiding uncomfortable truths can keep us stuck in unhealthy relationship patterns.

We also talked about the ideas behind my book, Lies We Tell Ourselves, and why learning to recognize our own self-deception is such an important part of personal development.

Will I ever get over them? 💔
It’s one of the most common questions people ask me after a breakup.

Sometimes the answer is yes, you will get over them. You will move on over time as you create a new life without them.

Other times, the memory of that person lingers for months, years, or even decades.

But here’s the truth that can really help you:
The more you invest in creating a meaningful life without them, the easier it will be to get over them.
They may still cross your mind and you may still miss them. But creating a life without them that is full of meaning will go a long way towards moving on.

You can list all the qualities you should want in a partner… but that doesn’t mean you’ll feel love for them.

Why? Because love isn’t just a choice—it’s a drive, an emotion, a physiological experience that defies logic.

So if you’ve ever wondered, “Why do I love this person when it doesn’t make sense?”—you’re not alone.

Love isn’t about checklists. It’s about connection, chemistry, and something deeper we can’t always explain. ❤️

One of the most powerful tools for moving on from a former flame is radical acceptance.

By reminding yourself in the most brutally honest way possible that your relationship is over--at least for today--you empower yourself to make choices based on the reality of your life. It keeps you grounded in the truth and combats our tendency to live in the past.

It’s a step towards living authentically and courageously.

When we're suffering, it may feel as though the intensity will last forever.

Yet, the phrase, "This, too, shall pass." brings hope. It's a recognition that no matter how deep the pain, it will not remain at its peak intensity indefinitely.

By embracing this perspective, we learn to navigate through adversity.

Building trust with your mate is a process. It’s shaped by the way we communicate each day.

I’m pleased to be cited by MSN sharing eight common phrases used by couples that can quietly erode emotional safety— and what to say instead that can build honesty, security, and connection.

The truth is that healthy communication isn’t about avoiding conflict. Instead it’s about learning how to stay respectful and connected through it.
