🦷 Is Your Child Ready for Sports Season? Don’t Forget the Mouth Guard! 🏈⚽🥋🏀

Helmets protect heads but mouth guards protect smiles. 💜

If your child plays a contact or high impact sport, wearing a properly fitted sports mouth guard can dramatically reduce the risk of dental injuries.

A sports mouth guard can help protect against:
🦷 Chipped or broken teeth
🦷 Knocked out teeth
🦷 Cuts to the lips, cheeks, and tongue
🦷 Jaw injuries and trauma

Sports where mouth guards are strongly recommended include:
🏈 Football
⚽ Soccer
🏀 Basketball
⚾ Baseball & Softball
🥍 Lacrosse
🏒 Hockey
🤼 Wrestling
🥋 Martial Arts
🏐 Volleyball
🛹 Skateboarding & BMX

As a board certified pediatric dentist, I always tell parents: it’s much easier (and less expensive) to prevent a dental injury than to repair one.

At Oui Smile Pediatric Dentistry, we’re happy to help determine the best mouth guard option to keep your child’s smile protected all season long.

Healthy smile? Let’s make sure that’s checked too! 💜

As the new school year begins, it’s the perfect time to get back into healthy routines, starting with your child’s smile.

✔️ Brush twice a day for 2 minutes with a fluoride toothpaste.
✔️ Floss every day once teeth are touching.
✔️ Pack smile friendly snacks like cheese, yogurt, apples, veggies, and plenty of water.
✔️ Keep an eye out for tooth sensitivity, pain, or loose fillings.
✔️ Schedule your child’s dental checkup before the school year gets busy.

Healthy habits at home help your child stay focused, confident, and ready to learn all year long. A healthy smile isn’t just good for teeth, it’s part of a successful school year!

Is It Time to Replace Your Child’s Toothbrush?
Many parents remember to brush twice a day but often forget about replacing the toothbrush itself!
Dr. Garcia recommends changing your child’s toothbrush every 3–4 months, or sooner if needed.
🚩 It’s time for a new toothbrush if:
✔️ The bristles are frayed, bent, or splayed outward
✔️ Your child has recently been sick with a cold, flu, or other illness
✔️ The toothbrush no longer looks clean or effective
✔️ Your child has been chewing on the bristles
Why does it matter?
When toothbrush bristles become worn out, they are less effective at removing plaque and food debris from the teeth and gums. A worn toothbrush simply doesn’t clean as well as a fresh one.
💡 Mom Tip from Dr. Garcia:
A fun way to remember is to change toothbrushes with the seasons—spring, summer, fall, and winter!
A fresh toothbrush is one of the easiest ways to keep little smiles healthy. 🦷💜
When was the last time you replaced your child’s toothbrush?

Mom Tip from Dr. Garcia 🦷💜
One thing I wish every parent knew? Cavities can start as soon as your baby’s first tooth comes in.
The moment teeth erupt, they’re at risk for tooth decay. That’s why it’s so important to begin brushing with a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste, avoid putting your baby to bed with anything other than water after brushing, and schedule their first dental visit by age 1 or within six months of their first tooth.
A few simple habits early on can help protect your child’s smile for years to come.

When Should You Start Flossing Your Child’s Teeth?
One of the most common questions Dr. Garcia hears from parents is:
“At what age should I start flossing my child’s teeth?”
The answer may surprise you: there isn’t one specific age.
Some children need flossing as early as 6 months old, while others may not need it until they’re 6 years old or older.
Why the difference?
👉 It all comes down to spacing between the teeth.
If your child’s teeth have spaces between them, a toothbrush can often clean those areas effectively. However, when two teeth touch, the toothbrush bristles can’t reach between them.
That’s where flossing comes in!
🚩 A simple rule to remember:
If the teeth touch, they need to be flossed.
Flossing helps:
✔️ Remove plaque and food between teeth
✔️ Prevent cavities in hard to reach areas
✔️ Keep gums healthy
✔️ Build healthy oral hygiene habits from an early age
Many cavities in children occur between the teeth, where a toothbrush simply can’t reach.
As a pediatric dentist, Dr. Garcia recommends parents help with flossing until children develop the hand skills and coordination to do it effectively on their own.
💜 Every child’s smile is different, which means every flossing journey is different too.
Save this post for later and check your little one’s smile tonight—do their teeth touch?

🦷✨ Why Early Orthodontic Evaluations Matter
When most parents think about orthodontics, they think about straightening teeth. But Phase 1 Orthodontics is often about much more than that.
As a board certified pediatric dentist, Dr. Garcia evaluates not only a child’s teeth, but also how their jaws are growing and developing. Because children’s jaws are still growing, certain orthodontic concerns can sometimes be addressed earlier, helping create a healthier foundation for the future.
Phase 1 Orthodontics, typically recommended between ages 6–10, may help:
✔️ Guide healthy jaw growth and development
✔️ Create space for incoming permanent teeth
✔️ Correct crossbites and severe crowding early
✔️ Reduce the likelihood of future extractions
✔️ Support proper oral function and airway development
✔️ Simplify future orthodontic treatment
Not every child needs Phase 1 Orthodontics. However, children with crowding, crossbites, underbites, mouth breathing, or limited space for permanent teeth may benefit from an early evaluation.
One of the greatest advantages of pediatric dentistry is identifying concerns while growth is still on a child’s side. Early intervention can often make a significant difference in long term oral health and smile development.
🌱 Sometimes the best time to guide a smile is while it’s still growing.
