🦷 “Why does my child’s new permanent tooth look so yellow?”

We hear this question ALL the time when kids start losing their baby teeth—and most of the time, it’s completely normal! 💜

Baby teeth are naturally much whiter, almost “bleach white,” while permanent teeth tend to have a warmer, slightly more yellow tone. When a new permanent tooth erupts right next to those bright white baby teeth, the contrast can make it look much more yellow than it actually is.

✨ The good news? As your child loses the rest of their baby teeth and more permanent teeth come in, the color difference becomes much less noticeable.

So before you worry about that “yellow” new tooth, remember—it may simply be a healthy permanent tooth hanging out next to some very white baby teeth! 🦷✨

Have you ever noticed a gap between someone’s two front teeth? 🦷✨

Sometimes, a prominent labial frenulum (the small band of tissue connecting the upper lip to the gums) can contribute to spacing between the front teeth.

Our muscles, soft tissue attachments, and oral structures can all influence how the teeth and jaws develop. That’s why early evaluation matters.

Not every gap needs treatment, and many spaces are completely normal during childhood and may close naturally as permanent teeth erupt. But when the frenulum appears to be contributing to persistent spacing, the right timing and treatment plan can make a difference.

At Oui Smile, we evaluate the whole smile (not just the gap) to determine whether monitoring, orthodontic treatment, or a simple laser frenectomy may be appropriate.
