LANTERMAN 60 FOR 60 ~ HIGHLIGHT 54 OF 60 - Services, Supports & Resources

At Lanterman Regional Center we believe that everyone of working age has the right to seek meaningful work. As part of this 60 Highlights for 60 Years, we're honoring the 81st anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM).

Lanterman's Board approved Employment First Policy says all people have the right to Competitive Integrated Employment (CIE): jobs that pay minimum wage or more, offer opportunities for raises and advancement, and have people with and without disabilities working side by side. Lanterman and our community partners can support people to obtain CIE through full or part-time employment, self-employment, micro-enterprise, or contract jobs and skilled work.

Employment options through Lanterman include:
>> Community Integration Training Programs (CITP): build community connections and job readiness, with flexible alternatives to traditional day programs

>> Individual Supported Employment (ISE): offers one-on-one help to find and keep a job in the community

>> Group Supported Employment (GSE): is intended to be a time-limited bridge that builds work experience on the way to individual employment

>> Paid Internship Program (PIP): a paid, supported internship where the individual can gain skills for future paid employment, either with the same job or lead to a lasting job elsewhere

>> Tailored Day Services (TDS): provides flexible ways to connect to the community and opportunities to volunteer, work or pursue post-secondary education

How do you get started? Tell your service coordinator you'd like to develop a Person-Centered Plan for Employment. They'll help you find the options that fit you.

LANTERMAN 60 FOR 60 ~ HIGHLIGHT 53 OF 60 - Services, Supports & Resources

As part of our 60 Highlights for 60 Years, Lanterman is proud to recognize October as Down Syndrome Awareness Month. Have you ever realized that an extra chromosome could bring an extraordinary amount of love, perspective & joy into the world?

Down syndrome, or Trisomy 21, means having an extra copy of chromosome 21. It influences how a person grows & learns, but it does not dictate who they are, what they can achieve, or what they dream of becoming. Despite outdated myths, individuals with Down syndrome are redefining boundaries every day: pursuing successful careers, attending college, driving, marrying, playing competitive sports & enriching our communities.

True inclusion begins when we look past a medical label & choose to see the unique person. At Lanterman, we work hand-in-hand with self-advocates & their families through service coordination & early intervention, helping ensure that every individual has the therapies, educational resources & community-based opportunities they need to thrive at every stage of life.

We also rely on strong partnerships with community organizations that educate the public, dispel misconceptions, & create spaces where individuals with Down syndrome genuinely belong. Awareness is just the first step. True belonging happens when our communities, schools & workplaces are intentionally built to welcome everyone's unique abilities.

Join Lanterman’s Koch-Young Resource Center, in collaboration with Disability Rights California (DRC), for a Voting Accessibility presentation on Tuesday, October 27 from 5 to 6 p.m. online via Zoom and in-person at the KYRC-Wilshire location.

Voting is your right, and in preparation for the November 3 elections, DRC along with the Office of Clients’ Rights Advocacy (OCRA) will be offering a non-partisan presentation on voting. The presentation will inform participants on:

- how to register to vote
- voting rights
- accessibility at polling places
