Dentures can vary widely in design, comfort, and maintenance — and understanding these differences helps staff support residents more effectively.
Full Dentures replace all teeth in the upper or lower arch. They rest directly on the gums and are typically removed daily for cleaning. These are the most common type seen in long-term care.
Partial Dentures replace only the missing teeth and attach to the remaining natural teeth with small metal clasps or hidden attachments. They help maintain alignment and chewing ability when not all teeth are lost.
Overdentures fit over a few retained roots or implants, improving fit and stability. Keeping even a few natural roots can help preserve bone and prevent the “sunken” look that often develops over time.
Implant-Supported Dentures are anchored to titanium implants placed in the jawbone. They provide the most secure and natural feel, improving chewing efficiency and speech — though they require good bone health and consistent hygiene.
Choosing the right type depends on each resident’s oral condition, dexterity, cognitive status, and ability to maintain hygiene. Understanding these options helps promote comfort, nutrition, and quality of life for residents who rely on removable prosthetics.
