Shoulder stiffness that makes it difficult to reach overhead or behind your back? Frozen shoulder may be one possible cause.

Also known as adhesive capsulitis, frozen shoulder develops when the capsule surrounding the shoulder joint becomes thickened and tight. It can cause pain and a progressive loss of movement, often making everyday activities like dressing or reaching more difficult.

Falls are a major source of injury in older adults, but some risk can be reduced.

A 2024 systematic review prepared for the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force evaluated randomized clinical trials of fall-prevention interventions in community-dwelling adults age 65 and older.

Across 29 exercise trials involving 14,475 participants, exercise programs were associated with a 15% lower rate of falls. They were also associated with fewer people experiencing at least one fall and a 16% lower rate of injurious falls.

The programs varied, but commonly included balance, strength, gait, functional training, or combinations of these approaches.

The takeaway is not that every fall can be prevented. It is that structured exercise can meaningfully reduce fall risk in older adults living independently.

Exercise should be appropriate for the individualโ€™s health, mobility, and fall risk. Anyone with recurrent falls, new balance problems, dizziness, weakness, or difficulty walking should be medically evaluated before beginning or significantly changing an exercise program.

A herniated disc can affect more than the disc itself.

A spinal disc has a softer inner center surrounded by a tougher outer layer. A herniated disc occurs when disc material pushes through a weakened or torn area of that outer layer.

Some herniated discs cause no symptoms. When a nearby nerve is irritated or compressed, symptoms may include back or neck pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness that can travel into an arm or leg.

Treatment depends on the location of the herniation, the symptoms it causes, and whether nerve function is affected. Surgery is not required in every case.

Disc degeneration may be associated with low back pain and other symptoms, but imaging findings do not always reflect how a patient feels.

In this endoscopic microdiscectomy, the surgeon works through a 7 mm incision using an endoscope and specialized instruments to access the affected area and remove disc material contributing to nerve compression.

This small-access approach allows the surgeon to reach the pathology while limiting disruption to surrounding tissue.
