Here are 3 important tips when supporting language development:
#1 Don’t pressure the child.
When kids feel pressured, they might feel stress and anxiety. With stress and anxiety, a physiological response in the brain makes it harder to access its resources and learn!
This can also create a negative association with communication, especially with kids with demand avoidance.
Our goal is not compliance or performance. It’s to build connection, intrinsic motivation, and a love for communication and learning!
#2 Don’t say “Say.”
When we tell our kids to “Say mama” or “Say ball.” We are removing meaning from the experience.
Saying a word becomes a direction to follow, rather than an opportunity to use and build expressive language.
#3 Model meaningful language in context.
Instead of saying “Say ____!” or asking lots of
questions (“What is that?” “Do you want to go outside?” “What is that called?”) simply model meaningful language in context (“It’s a bird!” “Let’s go outside.”)
In order for a child to begin using language meaningfully, a child has to learn words in a meaningful way.
