An important update for patients with Davis Vision or Superior Vision:

Effective August 24, 2026, The Eye Care Institute will no longer participate with these vision plans. MYTH vs. FACT πŸ‘‡
Myth: The darker the lens, the better the sun protection.

Fact: Tint and ultraviolet (UV) protection are two completely different things. A dark lens with no UV protection can be worse for your eyes β€” it relaxes your pupils and lets in even more harmful UV light. βœ…

Always look for a "100% UV" or "UV400" label, no matter the lens color or darkness. Share this with someone shopping for sunglasses this summer.

For the best defense against the sun, pair 100% UV-blocking sunglasses with a wide-brimmed hat. Sunglasses shield your eyes directly, while a hat reduces the ultraviolet (UV) light reaching your face and eyes from above. Wraparound frames add further protection by blocking light from the sides. Small habits like these, practiced consistently, protect your vision over a lifetime.

Children's eyes need sun protection even more than adults'. A child's natural lens is clearer, which allows more ultraviolet (UV) light to reach the back of the eye, and a significant portion of lifetime UV exposure occurs before age 18.

Protect your children with 100% UV-blocking sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats, and keep infants shaded from direct sun. Building these habits early protects their vision for life.

Ultraviolet (UV) light affects more than your skin β€” it affects your eyes, too. 🌞 Years of unprotected sun exposure are linked to cataracts, growths on the surface of the eye, and certain eye and eyelid cancers. Here is the encouraging part: sunglasses that block 100% of UV rays meaningfully lower that risk.

This UV Safety Month, protect your eyes every time you head outdoors β€” the same way you protect your skin. Save this post as a reminder, andschedule your exam with our us or stop by to pick out your new sunglasses today!

Some medications and health conditions can make you more sensitive to the sun β€” a reaction called photosensitivity β€” which means ultraviolet (UV) light can cause damage more easily. β˜€οΈ

Factors that can raise your sensitivity include:
πŸ’Š Certain antibiotics
🧴 Retinoid skin creams (such as Retin-A)
πŸ‘οΈ Light-colored eyes
πŸ”Ž Certain eye conditions
If any of these apply to you, extra protection matters. Wear 100% UV-blocking sunglasses, add a wide-brimmed hat, and ask your doctor or pharmacist whether your medications increase your sun sensitivity.

Test your sun savvy πŸ‘‡ Two things many people get wrong about protecting their eyes:

πŸ•ΆοΈ Darker lenses do NOT mean better protection. Tint and ultraviolet (UV) protection are completely different β€” always look for a "100% UV" or "UV400" label, no matter the lens color.
πŸ‘οΈ Light-colored eyes (blue, hazel, or green) are more photosensitive, which means they are more vulnerable to UV damage and need extra protection.

The bottom line for everyone: wear 100% UV-blocking sunglasses and add a wide-brimmed hat whenever you head outdoors. Save this post, and share it with someone who needs the reminder.

Buying sunglasses this summer? One label matters more than any other: look for "100% UV protection" or "UV400." πŸ•ΆοΈ That is your assurance the lenses block both UVA and UVB rays. What does NOT tell you anything about protection: the price, the lens color, or how dark the tint is.

Choosing UV-blocking lenses is one of the simplest, most effective ways to protect your long-term vision. Our optical department staff is here to help you find a pair you love!
