"My son used to have 5-6 meltdowns a day. We couldn't go anywhere without a crisis. After 8 months of ABA therapy, he's learned to recognize when he's getting overwhelmed and ask for breaks. We went to the grocery store yesterday without a single meltdown. I almost cried." - David, parent

💙 Emotional regulation is life-changing.

For children who experience the world more intensely, learning to manage big feelings isn't just about behavior - it's about quality of life for the whole family.

Let's talk about SENSORY PROCESSING. 🧠

Many children with autism experience the world differently:

🔊 SOUNDS can feel overwhelming (fluorescent lights humming, multiple conversations)
👕 TEXTURES can be unbearable (clothing tags, certain fabrics, food textures)
💡 LIGHTS can be too bright or distracting
👃 SMELLS can be intensely strong
✋ TOUCH can feel painful or uncomfortable

This isn't "being difficult." This is their nervous system processing sensory input differently than neurotypical brains.

Let's clear up the confusion: MELTDOWNS vs TANTRUMS. They're not the same thing. 🧠

😤 TANTRUM:
• Goal-oriented (wants something)
• Stops when goal is met or denied
• Child has control
• Responds to consequences

🌪️ MELTDOWN:
• Sensory or emotional overload
• Child has lost control
• Continues even after trigger is removed
• Not responsive to consequences
• Requires calming and regulation support

Autistic meltdowns aren't "bad behavior." They're a nervous system response to overwhelming input.

Understanding the difference changes how we respond - and that changes everything.

Let's Talk Fidgets!

Fidgets can be powerful tools that support focus, self-regulation, and emotional well-being.

At Breakthru Services, we often incorporate fidgets into our therapy sessions to help children and adults with autism, ADHD, anxiety, and other mental health needs manage their energy, reduce stress, and stay engaged.

These tools give the brain a chance to refocus by keeping the hands busy.

✅ They’re not distractions.
✅ They’re coping tools.
✅ And when used purposefully, they can make a big difference.

💬 Do you use fidgets at home? Tell us your favorite in the comments!

Transitioning from one activity to the next can be extra challenging for individuals with and Autism diagnosis.

It can cause overwhelm, anxiety, and frustration by not knowing what is going to happen next.

One way to help combat this and promote a better transition period, is to provide your child with a visual calendar. This will allow them to see what is coming next and take away some of the anxiety that comes with the unknown for them.

What are ways that help your child better transition?
