A lot of the stress we experience doesn’t just come from the situation itself, but rather from the judgments we attach to it. Thoughts like “I’m a failure,” “This is terrible,” or “Nothing ever works out” can quickly pull us deeper into shame, frustration, anxiety, or hopelessness. So what happens when we stop labeling everything as “good,” “bad,” “right,” or “wrong”?
The DBT mindfulness skill of practicing “nonjudgmentally” helps us step back and notice what’s happening without automatically attacking ourselves or the world around us. When we reduce judgment, we create more space to think clearly, respond effectively, and be a little less stuck in the emotional spiral. It’s not about pretending things are okay, it’s about seeing things as they are, with a little more awareness and a little less judgment.
Take a moment to slow down, notice what’s coming up, and practice observing without judging, and see what the outcome is.

Take a minute to slow down and notice your thoughts. Are they judgmental? Do you find yourself making snap judgements before getting to know people or before you have enough information to really draw that conclusion? Let’s review your thinking by asking yourself how did I determine that? Did I experience it through my senses now in the present or did I jump to a conclusion too quickly? Whatever the case don’t judge your judgements 😉 try to slowly work on them.

Take a minute to slow down and notice your thoughts. Are they stuck in the past, racing towards the future, or grounded in the present? Just observe, no need to change a thing. By taking a step back, you can more easily come back to the present moment. Practicing mindfulness like this increases awareness and understanding of yourself and your surroundings. You don’t have to wait for stressful moments to tune in and check where you’re at. This practice helps reorient you back to the present.
