Camping this summer? Or going other places where deer mice might have been? Keep in mind that hantavirus can spread from infected deer mice and cause serious illness.

When mouse droppings and nesting material are stirred up, the virus can get into the air, and people can breathe it in.

If you need to clean an area that’s been contaminated by rodents:
- Wear gloves while you clean.
- Don’t stir up dust or droppings.
- Spray contaminated areas with a freshly made 10% bleach solution and wipe up with paper towels, mop, or sponge.

Today is World Drowning Prevention Day, and with the summer heat in full swing, it’s a perfect reminder to keep our families safe around the water—whether you're cooling off at a county pool or heading to the Merced River or Lake McClure.

Here are a few quick, local resources you can use right now to stay safe:

Swim Lessons: Mariposa County Parks & Rec offers 2-week youth swim sessions for just $30. Check their portal to sign your kids up!

Beat the Heat: Public pools in Mariposa, El Portal, and Coulterville are open daily from 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM. Entry is only $2 per person (or $5 for the whole family).

Save a Life: Multiple organizations host CPR and First Aid classes. Knowing CPR can save a life in an emergency. Do a search online for the next class near you.

Pool Owners: If you have a backyard pool, make sure your safety fences, alarms, and covers meet the California Swimming Pool Safety Act requirements.

Pro-Tip: If you ever find yourself struggling in open water, remember to "Find Your Float"—tilt your head back, submerge your ears, spread your limbs like a starfish, and stay calm until help arrives.

❤️ Health Basics: Ensure you eat a healthy meal and drink plenty of water within 4 hours before arriving.
