Many teens and young adults grow up hearing messages about working hard, being productive, getting good grades, staying busy, and preparing for the future.

Over time, it can become easy to connect your productivity with your worth.

You may start believing:

“If I’m not accomplishing something, I’m falling behind.”

“Other people are doing more than me.”

“I’ll rest when everything is finished.”

“I don’t deserve a break until I’ve earned it.”

“If I slow down, I’m being lazy.”

The problem? Everything is never finished.

You are a person, not a productivity machine.

Ever notice how your brain can turn one small decision into a hundred different possibilities? You replay conversations, imagine everything that could go wrong, and keep asking yourself, “What if?”

That’s overthinking, and while it can feel like you’re solving a problem, it often keeps you from actually moving forward.

Overthinking creates the illusion that you need to have everything figured out before you take the next step. You might wait until you’re completely confident, certain, or sure you won’t make a mistake. The problem? You usually gain clarity by taking action, not by thinking about something forever.

Overthinking can also make small decisions feel huge. Instead of asking, “What’s one thing I can do right now?” your brain jumps to every possible outcome. Suddenly, sending a text, starting an assignment, making a decision, or trying something new feels overwhelming.

You don’t have to feel 100% ready to move forward. Sometimes confidence comes after you take the first step.

Good reminder!

As the new school year begins, remember that preparing for class also means preparing your mental health. Establishing a consistent sleep schedule and daily routine before the first day can help reduce stress, improve focus, and make the transition back to school feel more manageable.

Looking for additional back-to-school mental health resources? Explore NAMI's FLARE Mental Health Literacy Curriculum: https://www.nami.org/kids-teens-and-young-adults/school-resources/flare-by-nami-mental-health-literacy-curriculum/

Small changes today can make a big difference tomorrow. Prioritize your well-being as you head into the school year.
