Back-to-school season isn't just about buying notebooks and organizing backpacks. For many families, it's also time to think carefully about mental health.

Some children, teenagers, and college students pause or adjust psychiatric medications during the summer under the supervision of their prescribing clinician. As the school year begins, it's worth scheduling a follow-up visit to discuss whether that plan still fits the student's needs.

Academic expectations, sports, extracurricular activities, changing sleep schedules, and social demands can all influence how a student functions once classes resume. A medication that worked well last spring may need to be reassessed, while restarting medication should never happen without guidance from the prescribing clinician.

Planning ahead gives families time to ask questions, monitor any changes, and begin the school year with greater confidence.

If your child's psychiatric medications changed over the summer, consider scheduling a medication review now as the new school year gets under way.

What if the healthiest decision you make this month isn't starting something new—but giving yourself permission to stop chasing perfection?

National Wellness Month is a wonderful reminder that wellness isn't measured by flawless routines or constant positivity. Most of us will miss workouts, eat dessert, lose sleep, or have difficult days. That doesn't mean we've failed. Real wellness is built through small, consistent choices: getting enough sleep more often than not, taking medications as prescribed, staying connected with people who care about us, spending time outdoors, and asking for help when life becomes overwhelming.

Mental health is every bit as important as physical health. Anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, and other conditions are medical concerns—not personal shortcomings. Seeking treatment is no different than seeking care for diabetes or high blood pressure.

If you've been telling yourself you'll focus on your mental health "after things slow down," consider making August the month you begin. One conversation can be the first step toward feeling better.

Schedule a confidential appointment to learn how compassionate psychiatric care can help you move toward healthier days.
