Today I had the pleasure of joining a walking tour of Haines Square hosted by the Medford Public Library Medford Public Library Medford, Massachusetts and it gave me an even deeper appreciation for the neighborhood that Medford Physical Therapy is proud to call home.
A huge thank you to our guide, Dee, whose knowledge and storytelling brought the area’s history to life. We learned that Haines Square is named after Mayor Benjamin Haines (1915–1922), explored the historic MBTA waiting room and its World War I and II memorials honoring transportation workers, admired the beautiful 2022 mural celebrating the Mystic River, local wildlife, cyclists, families, and the neighborhood’s iconic triple-deckers, and stepped inside Modern Hardware to hear the story of its beloved founder, George.
Along the way we discovered remnants of the old A&P, the former bus depot and trolley hub, the Fellsway West Driving Club’s winter horse races, early 20th-century trolleys, Spring Street Extension, and the people who helped shape this neighborhood into what it is today.
What struck me most wasn’t just the history—it was the sense of community. Every building, mural, and story reflected generations of people investing in this place and in one another.
As the owner of Medford Physical Therapy, I’m grateful to be part of that story. I look forward to finding more ways to connect with our neighbors and continue building a healthy, active, and welcoming community together.
