Through sacred imagery, the Holy Spirit speaks to us, revealing truths that may not be evident to those using only the tools of reason. The icon is a work of tradition. It is theology written in images and color.

I realize icons may not speak to all who look upon them, yet for those who are drawn to them, we get pulled into the image that speaks to our soul. It is hard to put into words the emotion that fills my heart and soul when I gaze at an icon. It is a calling to prayer. W.H. Auden states, "To pray is to pay attention to something or someone other than oneself. whenever a man so concentrates his attention.....that he forgets his own ego and desires, he is praying." It amazes me not everyone feels the desire to be still and pray. It is an instant release from the chaos of life, it is where I find peace. 🙏❤

The gold halo around the head symbolizes divinity, spiritual enlightenment, and heavenly grace.
The chaos or darkness in the image represents the times in our lives when we begin to feel lost. We lose our way and begin to feel scared. But God has us. All we need to do is seek Gods guidance and follow the road of Love and we will find our way. Trust the Way of Light. 🙏❤️

I am in Richmond Virginia at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church attending an icon workshop given by Iconographer Suzanne Schleck. This year I am painting St. Michael the archangel protector of our military and patron saint of the Marine Corps. Known as a spiritual warrior and defender of all evil. Painting for a special intention, and I am keeping our nation in contemplative prayer throughout this week. Praying for peace on earth, for the end to all wars and for humanity to recognize caring for our earth and one another is our responsibility.

If anyone has a special intention for me to add to our prayer list, please message me or text me. The process represents our faith journey. We begin with ORDER….all is well and we feel safe on earth. Then comes DISORDER….life becomes complicated, our faith is challenged, things just don’t make sense anymore and becomes frightening. We begin to question things we were taught since childhood. This is the chaos phase. Then comes REORDER. We begin to seek answers and grow in our own autonomy, the light of love becomes alive again. Things start to come together and we are able to see with a new clearer lens and gain new wisdom. We grow emotionally and spiritually and ORDER is restored but with new confidence, compassion and a deeper love. Let the journey begin. 💕🙏😇 I am posting on my personal FB page.
