NAMI Presents: Navigating Schizophrenia in Black & Hispanic Communities (Rompiendo el Silencio)

Tuesday, May 19, 2026 | 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. ET

In recognition of World Schizophrenia Awareness Day, observed annually on May 24, this session explores lived experiences, storytelling, and reducing stigma in BIPOC communities impacted by schizophrenia. Maria Case, founder of Kompashion, reflects on her family’s experience navigating a parent’s schizophrenia and the importance of storytelling and open conversation within Spanish-speaking communities.

Ray Lay, a NAMI board member and national advocate, shares his personal journey with schizophrenia, homelessness, and incarceration. He explains how these lived experiences influence his efforts in peer support, criminal justice reform, and policy advocacy.

Together, Maria and Ray offer powerful perspectives on support, healing, dignity, and access to care. Their stories help humanize schizophrenia, challenge stigma, and elevate voices too often excluded from the mental health narrative.

If you experience attention regulation challenges or are navigating neurodiversity, the Pomodoro Technique can be a simple but powerful tool to support focus and reduce overwhelm.

The Pomodoro Technique is a time-management method that breaks work into short, focused intervals helping your brain stay engaged without burning out.

✨ How it works:
• Choose one task to focus on
• Set a timer for 25 minutes
• Work on that task only (no multitasking!)
• When the timer ends, take a 5-minute break
• After 4 cycles, take a longer 20–30 minute break

🧠 Why it helps:
• Makes tasks feel more manageable
• Reduces distractions
• Supports sustained focus
• Builds in rest (which your brain needs)

💡 Tips:
• If you get distracted, jot it down and come back to your task
• Adjust the timing to fit your needs (ex: 50/10 instead of 25/5)
• Use tools like Pomofocus or TomatoTimer to stay on track

This approach can be especially helpful for ADHD and other neurodivergent experiences offering structure without rigidity.

With this weeks snow and winter weather ❄️, we wanted to check in and share a few updates and gentle supports for getting through the coming uncertain days.

Coping at Home on a Snow Day 🏠
Whether you’re spending the day alone or sharing space with others, snow days can bring a mix of emotions, coziness for some☕🧣, restlessness or isolation for others.

A few gentle ideas that may help:

If you’re at home alone: 🤍

-Create some structure: choose one or two simple anchors for the day (a walk, a warm meal, a check-in with someone you trust)📱.
-Stay connected: a quick text, voice memo, or virtual coffee can help reduce feelings of isolation.
-Limit news and scrolling if it increases anxiety; check once, then step away.📵
-Practice grounding: wrap up in a blanket, notice warmth, sip something hot, or try slow breathing.🌬️

If you’re home with others:

-Set small boundaries where needed—quiet time, separate activities, or headphones are okay. 🎧
-Name expectations gently (for space, help, or downtime) to reduce tension.💬
-Build in moments of regulation: stretching, stepping outside briefly, or shared calm activities.
-Remember that everyone’s nervous system responds differently to disrupted routines.💛

✨ Flightpath to 2026 | A Moment of Reflection ✨

As I look back on this past year, I’m feeling deeply grateful for the work, the relationships, and the trust shared within the therapy space.

This year reminded me that consistency, presence, and compassion matter; sometimes more than anything else.

🌿 A few reflections from our SimplePractice year-in-review:
• A blend of tele-health and in-person care, offering flexibility and accessibility
• 19,525 minutes spent holding space
• 380 appointments
• 79 clients who allowed me to walk alongside them

We have worked to be “The Steady Supporter” and that feels meaningful. Being someone clients can rely on through life’s ups and downs is work I hold with care and humility.

As we step into 2026, my intention is to continue offering grounded, thoughtful, and accessible support and to keep expanding the ways care can be received.

Thank you to every client, colleague, and community member who made this year what it was 💜

Today we attended "Beyond the Surface: Deepening Understanding of ADHD, Substance Use, and Treatment Pathways" a webinar provided by Promises Behavioral Health

Beyond the Surface: Deepening Understanding of ADHD, Substance Use, and Treatment Pathways expands on previous discussions by examining the evolving presentation of ADHD across different life stages and the associated risks at each age. This training explores the complex relationship between ADHD and substance use disorders (SUDs), shedding light on misconceptions and reducing stigma. Participants will gain deeper insights into the neurobiological, psychological, and social factors that contribute to the high co-occurrence of ADHD and SUDs, with a particular focus on impulsivity, sensation seeking, and self-medication behaviors. A key component of the session includes an in-depth discussion on how ADHD manifests from childhood through adulthood, emphasizing age-specific challenges and risks.

For instance, impulsivity in childhood may lead to behavioral issues, while in adolescence, increased risk-taking can heighten the likelihood of early substance use. In adulthood, struggles with executive functioning and emotional regulation may contribute to self-medicating behaviors. Additionally, the training addresses the controversial question of whether prescribed ADHD medications, such as stimulants, increase the risk of substance use. By reviewing current research and clinical perspectives, participants gained a balanced understanding of the benefits and risks of medication management, including the potential for misuse versus its protective effects when properly managed.

We deepened our clinical understanding to serve by:

-Understanding how ADHD symptoms present differently in children, adolescents, and adults, and recognize the unique risks of substance use at each stage
-Explored the controversy surrounding stimulant medications, evaluating research on whether they increase or decrease the likelihood of substance misuse.
-Learned evidence-based interventions, harm reduction approaches, and best practices for supporting individuals with ADHD and co-occurring substance use disorders.
