Arizona has two different visibility killers during monsoon season.

A brownout happens when blowing dust completely obscures the road. Everything turns the color of the desert floor and you cannot see the hood of your car.

A whiteout happens when an intense rain cell drops so much water so fast that your wipers cannot keep up. Spray from other vehicles adds to it. Lane lines, brake lights, and other cars vanish.

Both happen quickly. Both can kill you. The response is similar: slow down gradually, pull completely off the road, and wait.

What you should never do is panic-brake in the travel lane.

There is a psychological reason chain-reaction pileups happen in dust storms.
When all your visual references disappear, your brain locks onto any available light. The taillights of the car ahead become your only anchor. You unconsciously steer toward them, assuming that driver can see the road.

When that lead car has actually pulled off the road but left its lights on, the following driver steers right off the highway and slams into them at full speed.

There is a 10-mile stretch of I-10 between Eloy and Picacho Peak that has been the site of some of Arizona's deadliest pileups.

The land beside the freeway used to be farmland. When the farms were abandoned, decades of plowing left the topsoil loose and powdery with nothing growing to hold it down. When monsoon downbursts hit, they pick up that dust and channel it directly across the highway.

These dust channels are narrow. You can be driving in perfect clear weather and hit a wall of zero visibility in a fraction of a second.

ADOT created a counterintuitive rule that has saved Arizona lives.

When you get caught in a haboob and have to pull over, turn off all your lights. Headlights, taillights, hazard flashers, even your foot off the brake pedal.

This feels wrong. Every other state teaches you to use hazard lights in bad weather. But in Arizona dust storms, your lights become a target. Other drivers lock onto your taillights thinking you are still moving on the road, and they steer directly into your parked car.

Pull all the way off the pavement. Set your parking brake. Go dark. Wait it out.

A haboob can take you from seeing the mountains to not seeing your own hood in about five seconds.

Drivers describe it like someone throwing a brown blanket over your windshield. The dust wall hits and the road disappears. Lane lines gone. Brake lights gone. Even the car directly in front of you is invisible.
