Earbuds, phones, and flip flops turn a bike ride into a coin flip.

Injury prevention programs list the same combination over and over: a rider who cannot hear traffic approaching, cannot brake properly because of the shoes, and is looking at a screen instead of the road.

Riding side by side while talking belongs on that list too, because it puts one child fully out in the traffic lane.

Sunset is arriving earlier every week, and most kids' bikes have no lights at all.

A rider in dark clothing on an unlit bike is effectively invisible until headlights are almost on top of them.

A white light on the front, a red one on the back, and reflective tape on the pedals and frame cost very little and completely change what a driver sees from a distance.

Set that rule now, before the after-school ride home turns into a ride home in the dark.

Riding against traffic feels safer and is not. Kids often decide that facing oncoming cars gives them more warning, and the logic makes complete sense to a ten year old.

The problem is that every driver pulling out of a driveway or turning right is scanning the direction traffic normally comes from.

A rider approaching from the opposite side arrives outside that scan entirely.

Closing speed roughly doubles as well.

Teach kids to ride with traffic, on the right, and to be predictable above all else.

One seat, one rider. It sounds obvious until you watch a kid head home with a friend perched on the handlebars or standing on the rear pegs.

A bike carrying two children steers differently, takes longer to stop, and puts the passenger in a position where they cannot catch themselves when it goes over.

Both of those now sit closer to sunrise and sunset than they did in August.

That number should reframe the whole conversation, because most of the safety effort at home goes into teaching a child how to ride down the block.

The dangerous part is the crossing. Turning drivers either do not see riders at all or they see them and misjudge how quickly they are closing.

Teach a child to stop at the edge, look left, right, and left again, and walk the bike across anything busy.
