Some work happens quietly, long after offices close and holiday plans begin.

This Labor Day, we recognize the people whose skill, dedication and compassion keep our communities moving, including those caring for patients around the clock.

To Southwest General’s physicians, nurses, clinical teams, support staff and every employee who contributes to the health of our community: thank you for the work you do today and throughout the year.

We wish our employees, patients and neighbors a safe and happy Labor Day.

You don’t have to be able to touch your toes to benefit from yoga.

While flexibility may get most of the attention, research suggests yoga can support balance, sleep, stress management and mental and emotional well-being. It also may help some people manage low back and neck pain.

And yoga doesn’t have to mean advanced poses or an hour-long class. Yoga combines movement, breathing and mindfulness, and there are styles and modifications for people of many ages and ability levels.

The goal isn’t to master the most impressive pose. It’s to find movement that works for your body — and that you’ll want to keep doing.

Recovery does not have one appearance, one timeline or one path.

For some people, it includes treatment and medication. For others, it may involve counseling, peer support, family support, a 12-step program or a combination of resources. Recovery also can mean rebuilding the parts of life that substance use or a mental health condition disrupted, including health, housing, relationships and a sense of purpose.

A setback does not erase progress. Asking for help is not failure. With appropriate treatment and support, people can and do recover.

Southwest General’s Oakview Behavioral Health Services offers assessment and outpatient addiction treatment for adults. To learn more, call 440-816-8200.

Back-to-school season means new routines, busy schedules…and the occasional scrape, bump or bruise.

Before the school year gets fully underway, take a few minutes to check the first-aid supplies you keep at home. Replace anything that has expired or run out and make sure the basics are easy to find when you need them.

A little preparation now can make those minor mishaps much easier to handle later.

Here’s to a healthy and safe school year!

A routine Pap test does not screen for every gynecologic cancer.

There are five main types, and knowing their names is only part of the story. Because most do not have routine screening tests, recognizing changes in your body can be especially important.

Unusual vaginal bleeding, persistent pelvic pain or pressure, feeling full unusually quickly and other changes that continue for two weeks or longer are worth discussing with a healthcare provider.

Swipe through to learn more about the five gynecologic cancers and why cervical cancer is different when it comes to screening.

In the first days of life, a lot happens quickly, including several important screenings that can provide valuable information about a baby’s health.

Their purpose is simple—to catch possible concerns early, when treatment and support can make the biggest difference. Even when a baby seems healthy, these screenings can provide important information that is not visible right away.

If you are a new parent, be sure you know when results will be available and what to do if your baby’s provider recommends follow-up testing.

Hospice care reaches beyond the patient. It can mean someone who sits quietly with a family during an uncertain moment. Someone who checks in after a loss. A volunteer who offers companionship. Or practical guidance for a friend who wants to help but does not know what to say or do.

Southwest General’s Hospice Services offers bereavement specialists, chaplains and volunteers who help patients and families navigate some of life’s hardest moments with comfort, connection and dignity.

Our latest blog explores the many ways this support can make a difference—before, during and after a loss.

Did you know that overdose deaths in the U.S. have been on the decline for the past three years?

Preliminary data from the estimates that approximately 70,000 people died from drug overdoses in 2025—nearly 14% fewer than the year before. Wider availability of naloxone, greater access to addiction treatment and changes in the illegal drug supply may all be contributing, although researchers are still working to understand the decline.

Knowing how to recognize an overdose, carrying naloxone and connecting people with evidence-based treatment can save lives. Addiction is a treatable health condition, and recovery is possible.

Southwest General’s Addiction Services at Oakview Behavioral Health Services offers outpatient treatment and recovery support for adults with substance use disorder. To learn more, or to schedule an appointment, call 440-816-8200.
