Ice Cube said Chris Tucker was offered $10 to $12 million to return as Smokey in Next Friday.
But Tucker did not take the role.
According to Ice Cube, Tucker turned it down because of his faith. He said Tucker no longer wanted to cuss or smoke w**d on camera.
That detail matters because Smokey was one of Tucker’s most famous roles. The character was funny, but the role was tied closely to w**d smoking and crude talk.
Tucker later said the w**d issue was one reason he did not come back. He said he did not want to keep representing everybody smoking w**d. He also gave a fuller answer later, saying the choice was not only about faith. He wanted to move forward as an artist too.
Still, walking away from that kind of money is rare.
Most people in Hollywood would take the check and explain it away later. Chris Tucker chose not to keep playing something that no longer sat right with him.
That is conviction. Money is not worth your peace with God. A man who can say no to millions because of conscience is showing that faith can cost you something, but obedience is worth more.
