Energy Express Energy Express is a free, six-week, summer reading and nutrition program for children 1st-6th grade living in West Virginia. The answer: Energy Express

We improve reading levels through books, art, drama, and vocabulary. Energy Express is funded by a grant from AmeriCorps. During the summer many children lose academic skills. Without school breakfast and lunch, many children lose nutritional well-being. Many children have few structured learning opportunities. Summer learning and nutritional losses are greater for children living in rural and low

-income communities. Children living in rural and low-income communities often fall behind during the summer months, starting each school year behind where they were the previous spring. Successive summers of limited learning opportunities may cause children to fall below grade level by the end of elementary school—putting them further and further behind more privileged peers.

It’s World Environment Day! One of the weekly themes at Energy Express is Making My World a Better Place. This week, we engage children in community service and reflection.

Mentor's guide children to recognize a need in their community, take action through a group project, and reflect on how their efforts made a difference.

By connecting learning with service, youth begin to see how caring for their community also means caring for the world around them. 🌍💚

It’s a wrap on State Training at Jackson’s Mill! 💚

This week, our WVU Energy Express team came together for an engaging and impactful training experience. Our AmeriCorps mentors, Community Coordinators, and Literacy Mentors spent time learning how to build print-rich environments and create positive, healthy learning spaces for our children.

Through interactive sessions led by key West Virginia educational leaders and experienced site coordinators, our team gained valuable tools, fresh ideas, and renewed energy for the summer ahead.

We had a great time, learned a lot, and can’t wait to put it all into action for Summer 2026! ☀️📚

Shout-out to our Community Coordinators!

So much of what we do wouldn't be possible without our amazing Community Coordinators. From recruiting volunteers, reaching out to civil servants, and interacting with local organizations, to sharing the Energy Express story with the community, they become the thread that ties our sites and their communities together.

Graphic organizers aren’t just a classroom staple. They’re a powerful way to deepen understanding when used with purpose. When students use them to connect ideas, explain their thinking, and reflect on what they’ve learned, these tools become a pathway to stronger comprehension and engagement.

Families who read together grow together. Watching a child’s eyes light up when they recognize a word for the first time isn’t just exciting… it’s the start of a lifelong love of learning.

When families are involved in reading at home, children build stronger skills, confidence, and curiosity.
