What is a food desert and how are they created?
A food desert is a geographic or socio-economic area where residents have limited or no access to affordable, fresh, and nutritious food options.
Food deserts are rarely accidental. They are the results of 4 socioeconomic factors that compound over decades:
1. Grocery Store Flight
2. Structural Racism and Redlining
3. Transportation Gap
4. Poverty and Inflation Loop
We’ll be deep diving into each factor, as they specifically affect Muskegon County, throughout the upcoming weeks and finding current or proposed solutions to the problem.
