It's time for a Memory Minute Tip!

A memory evaluation is worth considering when changes are persistent, getting worse, or starting to interfere with everyday life. Occasional forgetfulness, like forgetting a name and remembering it later, misplacing keys occasionally, or missing an appointment once in a while, can happen with normal aging.

Watch for signs such as:
• Repeatedly forgetting recently learned information, conversations, or appointments.
• Asking the same questions repeatedly despite having received the answer.
• Difficulty with familiar tasks—cooking a usual recipe, using appliances, navigating a familiar route, or managing routine activities.
• Trouble managing finances or medications, including unpaid bills or unusual purchases.
• Getting lost or confused in familiar places.
• Increasing difficulty finding words, following conversations, or making decisions.
• Noticeable changes in judgment, personality, mood, or behavior.
• Frequently putting things in unusual places and being unable to retrace their steps.
• A decline in the person's ability to drive, shop, prepare meals, maintain the household, or otherwise live independently.

An important clue is change from that person's own previous level of functioning, rather than whether they seem forgetful compared with someone else.

If you or a loved one are experiencing these symptoms, contact us today for resources!

This September, we’re proud to shine a spotlight on the veterans who are part of our communities. We’re celebrating the meaningful connections, traditions, and experiences that make our veteran residents such an important part of our communities. Throughout the month, we’re taking time to honor their service, celebrate their stories, and create opportunities for connection and belonging. It's time for a Memory Minute Tip!

Dementia can bring significant changes in a loved one's personality, behavior, and communication, which can be difficult and sometimes painful for family members to understand. A person who was once patient, independent, or outgoing may become anxious, irritable, withdrawn, suspicious, or confused. They may also have difficulty finding the right words, following conversations, remembering recent events, or expressing their needs. These changes are often caused by the effects of dementia on the brain rather than a deliberate change in who the person is.

Understanding that behaviors are symptoms of the disease can help loved ones respond with greater patience, compassion, and reassurance. Speaking calmly, using simple language, allowing extra time for responses, and avoiding arguments can make communication easier. Although dementia may change how a loved one behaves and communicates, the person's feelings, dignity, and need for love and connection remain important.
