Have you gotten in your Daily Dose of Movement today?!

A beautiful day today! It doesn’t matter if you go for a walk, bike ride or groom your horse…if you’re moving, it counts!!

Wren wants me to throw all the “sticks” (or twigs 😆) for her in the preserve despite carrying one in her mouth the entire time!

Friendly PSA: this is not the time of year to wear chapstick to the barn! 🤣 Unless you want a shaggy dog (and by dog I mean horse) mustache! Abbey and Keeper thoroughly enjoyed being groomed today! All that winter coat is itchy!

Just because the sun isn’t out, doesn’t mean you can’t get out! It’s a beautiful cloudy day with snow melt in full force!

The air is warm but the footing is slippery! Be sure to wear your snow shoes or yak Trax and remember fall prevention strategies!

Wren and I achieved our Daily Dose of MOVEMENT this afternoon on this Spring forward Sunday!

Come on people, get out there and MOVE! Spring is in the air! 💜🐶🎉

ProActive Physical Therapy will be closed Monday due to the snow storm. Get your errands and chores done today and everyone stay safe!

Remember your form and mechanics while shoveling! Looking like it’s going to be a wet, heavy snow!

Don’t forget about your indoor exercise activity!

See you Tuesday!

Today was a beautiful day, sunny and mild, to get in your Daily dose of Movement! With about 12 inches of snow remaining on the ground, the snow shoes were a must in the preserve!

Having a hard time getting outside to exercise? No problem! There are plenty of exercises and activities you can do indoors to check off your movement box for the day!

Activities like:
Stairs
Chair squats
Wall push ups
Standing marching
Supported lunges
Dancing
Jumping jacks
Planks/modified plank
Heel/toe raises
Yoga video
Pilates video
Household chores including vigorous scrubbing, vacuuming and cleaning!

I think it’s safe to say most of our Daily Dose of Movement today was snow removal! Had about 15 inches at Stones Throw Acres and are watching a possible system set to arrive next weekend…one that could be bigger than Fern!

In preparation for this, let’s talk about snow shoveling safety!

To snow shovel safely and effectively:

1. Warm up - stretch your arms, legs, shoulders and back to prevent injury. A couple sets of jumping jacks will kick start your cardiovascular system!

2. Dress appropriately - layer clothing, wear gloves and use boots that have good traction. Ice clips or YakTrax are very effective means for increasing traction in slippery conditions. A fall could be devastating and result in injury!

3. Hydrate - drink water before and during shoveling, you can still get dehydrated even in the cold.

4. Eat - have a snack or small meal 30 min prior to shoveling, it will help fuel your efforts!

5. Push, don’t lift - push snow instead of lifting whenever possible to help reduce strain.

6. Use your legs - bend at your knees, keep your back straight and lift with your legs. Tighten your core and gluteal muscles!

7. Don’t pivot or twist - move your feet to turn and throw snow, avoid twisting from your torso.

8. Small loads - pace yourself, don’t over load the shovel.

9. Shovel often - when forecasted large amounts, shovel 2-3 times during the storm if able and safe to do so. Fresh snow is lighter than packed snow!

10. Know your limits - know what you’re reasonably capable of, call on friends for help or heavier equipment.

Stay safe as we have about 10 more weeks of winter!
