🌾 Protecting the Sounds of the Farm: Why Ag Hearing Loss Isn’t "Just Part of the Job"

Hearing loss is one of the most common—yet overlooked—occupational hazards in agriculture. Because inner-ear nerve damage happens gradually and painlessly, it’s easy to dismiss. But once those auditory cells are gone, they never grow back.

Permanent damage starts with sustained exposure at just 85 decibels (dB), a threshold shattered daily around the farm. Squealing livestock at feeding time can reach 110–115 dB (causing damage in under two minutes without protection), while grain dryers, augers, and open-cab tractors consistently blast between 90 and 115 dB.

The good news? Agricultural hearing loss is completely preventable with small, low-friction habits. Stash jars of foam earplugs inside every tractor cab, combine, utility vehicle, and shop entrance so protection is always within arm’s reach. Upgrading to electronic Bluetooth earmuffs allows you to take calls, listen to farm radio, and communicate safely while blocking out harmful engine roar.

Even simple equipment maintenance—like replacing rusted mufflers or tightening vibrating metal shields—can cut operating noise in half. A great rule of thumb: if you have to shout for someone an arm’s length away (about 3 feet) to hear you over equipment or livestock, you’re in the danger zone and need ear protection.

Don’t wait until conversations around the dinner table or children's voices become hard to understand. An annual hearing screening or baseline audiogram catches high-frequency loss early so you can protect your hearing and livelihood for decades to come.

Call Nevada Regional Medical Center at (417) 667-3355 to schedule a checkup or talk with your provider about preventative screenings.
