What a wonderful department! These ladies are part of what is great about NRMC.

This Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month, we're celebrating the people whose expertise helps our care teams monitor progress and guide the next steps in our patients' journeys.

Through early mornings, anxious appointments, and meaningful milestones, our sonographers offer care, compassion, and a reassuring presence. It's no wonder they often build some of the strongest bonds with our patients.

This article gives some details about how the Marshall, MO hospital changed upon its acquisition by an outside firm. The labor and delivery services were closed immediately after but they had also lost or downsized other critical departments. Their community will miss those services.
I wrote a post on March 13, 2026 addressing the idea of an outside buyout of NRMC and why that would threaten our OB department. This serves as a stark example of just the very outcome I predicted.

Fitzgibbon Hospital joins the ranks of nearly a dozen hospitals across the state that have shuttered labor and delivery services since 2010. More than half of Missouri’s counties have no local labor and delivery services or obstetric clinicians, according to a recent March of Dimes report.

I’ve been watching maternity wards close nearby throughout my career. Osceola lost their OB department in the 90’s and their hospital about 10 years ago. El Dorado Springs, Lamar, Carthage, Butler, Fort Scott, Iola and Monett have all lost obstetric care services in the past 24 years. There are a few people who have dug really deep to make sure NRMC did not lose maternity care. It’s fragile and precious. Telemedicine and mobile clinics and traveling doulas all have something to offer but the right here-right now nature of our hospital and OB department are irreplaceable. I know I mention this frequently but I do that because I want others to understand how precarious our local services are and how hard we should hold on to them.
