THERAPIST FAQ: How is EMDR different from talk therapy?

Talk therapy works largely through conversation and insight β€” understanding your patterns, processing out loud. That's valuable, and sometimes it's enough.

EMDR works differently. It uses bilateral stimulation (like guided eye movements) to help your brain reprocess a memory that got "stuck." You don't have to talk through every detail. Instead, we help the nervous system finish processing what it couldn't at the time, so the memory loses its charge.

Many people come to EMDR after talk therapy helped them understand their trauma but not fully release it. The two can absolutely work together.

Sleep isn't self-care fluff β€” it's when your brain processes emotion, consolidates memory, and regulates mood. Chronic sleep deprivation can mimic and worsen anxiety and depression. If therapy feels stuck, sleep is one of the first places I look.

This one small shift changes everything.

"What's wrong with me?" assumes you're broken and looks for a defect. "What happened to me?" recognizes that your responses made sense given what you lived through. Your reactions aren't malfunctions β€” they're adaptations.

You were never broken. You were shaped by your experiences, and what was shaped can be reshaped. That's the whole premise of trauma work.

Save this as a reminder for the hard days. 🀍

THERAPIST FAQ: What actually happens in a first session?

Honestly? A lot less than people fear. There's no couch, no digging into your worst memories on day one. The first session is mostly us getting to know each other. I'll ask what brought you in and what you're hoping for, and you get to see if I feel like a good fit.

You are always in control of how much you share and how fast we go. Nothing is required. It's a conversation, not an interrogation.

Have a question you've always wanted to ask a therapist? Drop it below β€” it might become a future post. πŸ‘‡

Let me be clear first: medication is a valid, sometimes necessary support, and therapy is the foundation. This isn't an either/or post.

But nutrition keeps getting left out of the mental health conversation, and it shouldn't be. Your gut and your brain are in constant communication. The fuel you give your body directly affects mood, energy, focus, and how well every other intervention works. It's not a side topic β€” it's part of the treatment picture.

Shout out to nutritionists and dietitians β€” they are deeply knowledgeable, and collaborating with them is one of the most underrated moves in mental health care.

So let's talk: what actually supports YOUR mental wellness? Movement, sleep, connection, nature, creative work β€” drop it below. πŸ‘‡

Therapists β€” a question. When was the last time you sat in a room where you didn't have to be the steady one?

We hold space all day. We track, we contain, we stay regulated so everyone else can fall apart safely. And then we go home and there's mostly no one who really gets what that costs.

So I'm starting something. A support group for therapists β€” not consultation, not supervision, no case talk. Just us, being human together, once every other week on Zoom.

The first meeting is free, and it's coming up soon.

If you want the details, comment "in" or send me a message and I'll get them to you.

And if you know a therapist who's been running on empty, tag them. πŸ’›

Another question, answered.
Yes. PTSD isn’t determined by whether the abuse left physical injuriesβ€”it’s about how overwhelming, threatening, and inescapable the experience was for your nervous system. Emotional abuse, especially when it’s chronic or happens in childhood or close relationships, can absolutely lead to PTSD or complex PTSD. Many survivors say the emotional wounds were actually the hardest to heal because they shaped how they saw themselves and the world. The good news is that our brains and nervous systems are capable of healing, and effective trauma therapies can help.

Ask me your questions! I will post them and answer them! Odds are, someone else is wondering the same thing.
