Our emotions become their environment.

One of the remarkable things about the brain is its ability to read emotion. Even as language and memory decline, many people living with dementia retain the ability to sense the emotional tone of those around them. They may not remember the conversation, but they often remember how it felt.

When caregivers are calm, the person with dementia is more likely to feel safe. When we speak gently, move slowly, and offer reassurance instead of urgency, we help regulate their nervous system. On the other hand, stress, frustration, or anxiety can unintentionally increase their own fear, agitation, or confusion.

This doesn’t mean caregivers have to be perfect. Caring for someone with dementia is one of life’s greatest challenges. It simply reminds us that our presence is one of the most powerful therapeutic tools we have.

Before entering your loved one’s room, pause. Take one slow breath. Relax your shoulders. Soften your voice. Your calm may become the peace they are unable to create for themselves.

At Dementia Care at Home™, we believe that compassion is contagious. The mood you bring into the room often becomes the mood they experience.

💙 Lead with peace. Speak with kindness. Love is reflected long after words are forgotten.

☀️ Too much heat isn't safe for anyone, but it is especially risky for older adults. As we age, our bodies don’t adjust as well to sudden temperature changes. Plus, common prescription medications (like blood pressure meds or diuretics) and chronic health conditions can alter how the body controls its temperature or sweats.

The National Institute on Aging suggests these simple steps to lower the risk of heat-related illness:
💧 Hydrate wisely: Drink plenty of liquids like water or drinks with electrolytes. Avoid caffeine and alcohol.
🏠 Find a cool zone: Stay in air conditioning during hottest parts of the day
👗 Dress for weather: Choose loose-fitting, lightweight clothing made of natural fabrics like cotton, which feel cooler than synthetics.

⚠️ Know the signs: Dizziness, muscle cramps, headache, or nausea are all warnings that your body is overheated. Watch out for (confusion, fainting, hot/dry skin).
