Ochsner MD Anderson Cancer Center is the first cancer center in the South to offer Biology-guided Radiotherapy (BgRT), a technology that tracks tumors in real time during radiation treatment.

Most radiation therapy relies on static images taken before treatment begins. BgRT is different. Using PET imaging combined with a linear accelerator, the RefleXion platform continuously adjusts the radiation beam to follow tumor movement, whether from breathing or other normal body activity.

The result is more precise targeting, less damage to healthy tissue and a better experience for patients.

Currently FDA-approved for patients over 21 with specific bone and lung cancers, the technology also opens the door for future clinical trials, including treatment for neurological tumors and prostate cancers.

The five-year cancer survivor rate in the United States is now 70%. As the survivor population grows, cancer centers are evolving their care models to ensure ongoing support for patients as they move beyond active treatment.

At Ochsner MD Anderson Cancer Center, our team is expanding the role of advanced practice providers (APPs) to lead survivorship visits, develop personalized care plans and provide consistent follow-up.

Erica Doubleday, NP, director of Advanced Practice Providers at Ochsner MD Anderson, said cancer survivors value clarity, accessibility and continuity.

"Our model emphasizes multidisciplinary collaboration — integrating oncology, primary care, behavioral health and supportive services — to address not only surveillance, but also the long-term physical and psychosocial effects of cancer," she said. "We are increasingly standardizing survivorship care plans, embedding symptom management and psychosocial support, and strengthening collaboration with cardio-oncology, integrative oncology, women’s wellness and more to ensure long-term follow-up is both accessible and comprehensive."
